I was in San Diego a couple of weeks ago visiting family and talked to several Charger fans. I talked to them about Brees and they all said the only gripe about him is red zone performance. I didn't think much about it at the time (after pounding Tampa) but after today I started wondering. Don't get me wrong, I love Brees and still felt like we had an outside chance to tie the game today when we were down 21 with 5 minutes to go. But here are the stats:

Brees 2005 2004 2003

Att/Comp/Yds/TD/Int
163-94-809-41-7 52-32-295-16-3 63-42-374-20-1 48-20-140-5-3

He is tied with Kerry Collins and Marc Bulger for most picks during that 3 year span even though he had a great year in 2004. In 2005 he was tied for second in picks with Brady and Brunell. In 2003 he was tied for most picks in the league with Collins and Bledsoe. Here's to getting back on track next week against the dirty birds

I can count four interceptions in the red zone this year alone right off the top of my head. I just hope he works on it because Brees has been great otherwise.

According to NFL.com
here are Drew's splits from the 19-1 yard line:(before today)
14-32 6 TD 0 INT 91.7 QB rating

I heard the same kind of talk from the SD fans a while back....at that time I figured that it was jealousy, but they said that Brees will hit a slump towards the middle of the season, and then gradually fades away towards the end of season....he might have one or 2 more good games left in him, but after that he will start making more and more mistakes and that will ultimately will get costly. They pointed out how Brees took them to a 12&4 season, only to lose in the first rd......and then as he was getting closer to the playoffs, the worse he played....

well, this team has more worries than Brees.......granted he stunk this game, and we'll see how will he rebound next week......but regardless how it comes out, the Saints are making tons of mistakes apart from Brees, and their collective output is not enough for a post-season berth right now!

I agree with you that there are many other mistakes being made. I also think that if Colston doesn't go down those picks don't happen today. Drew visibly doesn't seem to have the confidence in anyone (even Joe) that he does in Colston. I can't realy blame him. Even if Marques is out Deuce and Joe always get up to play the falcons and I really think we will right the ship next week.

The line of scrimmage may not have been in the red zone but we all know he three a pick down by the goal line against PHI and GB before today. I do think he will bounce back though.

man you better hope we win this game at atlanta. i could care less if we lose the rest of the year but they better beat the damn falcons..... their off sucks, and if i see the likes of their wr's beating our d backs, oh there will be nothing that will make me more mad... this team better be mad as hell and go in there and win and win big. it better not be close.

when he is not in the red zone, he has yards of field to eye for potential receivers. his height may not be as much as a factor for that reason. fewer big bodies in his immediate line of sight. in the red zone, those big guys are right on top of him and could be blocking his line of sight in every direction. (of course, this is where you want your guys where they are supposed to be to eliminate this as a problem.) question: it could be his 6' is a MAJOR reason for those red zone stats. comments?

We need to stop playing "cute" in the red zone. We have a physical team. Bring that on!! Run the ball 4 times if that is what it takes!!!

Look guys when you throw 52 times in a game you are going to throw a pick IMO but I think we would all agree that he is pne of the best in the league and if he can I promiss he will be working on it.

It's interesting that during last year, and right when Brees was let go, San Diego fans griped about Brees that:

1. He was only good because of LT and Gates
2. He was short, so got too many passes knocked down
3. He couldn't throw the long ball
4. His Red Zone performance.

Now that he has dispelled the first 3 of those 4 "gripes", these same San Diego fans say "The ONLY gripe we had was RZ performance"

Convenient. Take the ONE area where Brees hasn't been nigh perfect and exploit it.

These are the same San Diego fans who, while they claimed Brees was only good because of Gates and LT, ignore the same about Rivers. Rivers #1 receptions guy? LT. #2? Gates. Same as Brees. Yet somehow that makes Rivers great, but it was a problem when it was Brees.

Don't seem right to me.

I am all in favor of giving Drew Brees a pass (as we did in the Ravens game). But ... I can guarantee you AB would never have gotten that pass from us - not even in his first full season as an NFL starter. You all know what you would have said if AB had that game. Not to say that we should do to Brees what we did to AB, just noting that we didn't treat him fairly (and IMO that combined with his mental fragility made him a worse QB). But that is neither here nor there.

Except that it did bother me that Brees didn't take the blame for the loss. He threw 3 picks - two inside the 10 in the endzone and a third for a TD that was a panic to avoid a sack. If you figure twice inside the ten should equal at least a TD and a FG plus the INT return he gave up, that is at least 17 points (net) that he personally threw away. In a two touchdown loss. AB used to not take all the blame either (which was inexcusable). And we called him on it. But Brees gets a pass? Joe Horn was diplomatic - he gave Brees (and the defense) a pass. Joe took the blame with the receivers. That's what a man does. I love Brees, but after his game you don't say "WE have to protect the ball" and the Bengals safety made "a great play" on the first endzone INT. You say: "I need to protect the ball. I am the leader of this team. We were the better team for much of the game. But I gave the ball and gave them points and took points off the board for us. I take the blame. It will not happen next week in Atlanta. Period." AB never said that and we called him a loser - Drew Brees is a winner - but not on Sunday.

Also, on a side note, why did they keep Fred Thomas (who is a player I respect much) on Chad Johnson when it was clear the Bengals were creating and explointing that match up all day. Even if you wanna keep McKenzie on his regular side, give Craft (or the ball boy) a shot to do what Thomas obviously could not do at that time. And didnt Bullocks figure out he needed to stay deep after the first, or second, bomb to Chad?

tristang - couldn't have said it better myself. Let's not take any pointers about football from SD fans, k? My impression of the NO fans is that they have forgotten more about football than many of the fans in SD will ever know.
