Breaking down winning and worrisome picks

2013 NFL Draft: Breaking down winning and worrisome picks - NFL.com

Best pick (first round)
Wait for it ... Kenny Vaccaro, safety, drafted 15th overall by the New Orleans Saints. I've watched a lot of Saints football over the past three years, and I can tell you that this team needed help in the deep middle. I've had many a conversation with my colleague -- and former New Orleans standout -- Darren Sharper about the back four on that football team. Ultimately, the linebackers and secondary let this team down through much of last season -- as well as during the loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the 2011 playoffs. Let's not forget the poor tackling from the secondary during the postseason prior; remember "beast mode?" Vaccaro will be an instant cure-all when added to a safety group that features the aging Roman Harper and the wildly inconsistent Malcolm Jenkins, who has placed the bar high but has yet to keep it there in his young career.

"Placed the bar high?" I like Jenkins and I think he'll do better this year, but I can't remember when he was ever better than average.

I agree. He may not be the most attractive pick. Yet when you look at the possible difference he may make for the Saints he is the best pick. If we had solid safety play in two of the last three post seasons (@ Seattle & San Francisco) we could very well be looking at two more championships.

Hey Guys. Is anyone in here Big-12 aware enough to let us know how Kenny Stills performed against Kenny (Johnny V:mwink:) V? Stills looks like a great pick... played 3 years so he and Kenny V must have been in a few tangles.

Not in the BIG-12 but i had a lot of time on my hands today so I watched last years game. They weren't matched up often. I think Stills only had like 3 catches for 40yds that game (no catches against Vaccaro) as he mostly played outside, but did play some in the slot. That Texas D is horrible Vaccaro rarely gets thrown at but when he does, it's ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS an out pattern. And they make it so easy, I don't know if it's the coaches making him play inside or if this is something he does on his own. He's often beat before the play even starts. I noticed this in the WV game and the OU game.

In the first photo, when he's lined head up on the slot, he's awesome.

But then on some running downs, they'll have him play more down and inside like in picture 2 for run support I guess (which he sucked at in this game). Whenever they do this, the offensive recognizes it and it's a 7,8, 10 yard out every single time for the easy completion. Everyone else is in man, not sure if he's supposed to be in zone or what but it seems to be all man.

Thanks Bro... I found some interesting things... he was good as a freshman and sophomore too...here are just a few:

in 2013 --- ranks seventh in the Big 12 in receptions per game and eighth in receiving yards per game ... led team in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns ... tallied three 100-yard receiving games ... tied a school record with four touchdown receptions, including the game-winning score with 24 seconds remaining, at West Virginia

in 2011 --- hauled in multiple TDs in a game for the first time in his career vs. Texas ... just the fourth Sooner with multiple receiving TDs in a game vs. Texas

in 2010 --- had a career-high 86 yards receiving vs. Texas Tech ... had three receptions for at least 49 yards, all of which went for touchdowns.

Those numbers show that he can score from a long way out.

In 2010 Jenkins looked to be a future fs superstar. He had an amazing year. Unfortunately he seems to have regressed each year after.
