Benson Purchase Anniversary (1 Viewer)

The beginning of the beginning for the Saints happened when Benson bought the Saints.

By my calculations, the Saints have been 228-219 since Benson bought the team in 1985.
He has brought a Hall of Fame QB, coach, and a championship to this great city.

People also forget how close he came to moving the team OUT of New Orleans.

Still...had Benson NOT purchased the team, there would have been no team here to go through Katrina or "almost" be moved to S.A. Instead, the Jacksonville Saints would be the team in question. No Benson, no team. Mecom was set to sell the team to a Jacksonville group and would have done so had Benson & his group not come forward at the last minute.

I will always be grateful to Benson for buying the team, the S.A. debacle notwithstanding.

JMO.

I agree and the San Antonio debacle had a lot do with then Governor Blanco with her wanting to do business Benson through the media instead of in private behind closed doors. The uncertainty of post New Orleans after Katrina just made things worse

Whatever ups and downs (Ditka, potential moves) there have been, no single day since this day 28 years ago have I felt worse about the Saints' prospects than I did on the best day before it. Even in the depths of the Iron Era I didn't feel nearly as wracked about the future as I did when Bum had a chance to get us to 0.500. I might have felt bad about games or even seasons, but never had less hope for the future since Mora showed up.

Four outstanding hires (Finks, Mora, Loomis, Payton) is more than some of the old original owners made in decades.
