So I decided building a PC is cheaper ... a question? (1 Viewer)

Nice. Fwiw, 8.1 is due in less than a month and will give you back the start menu.

Yeah I've been reading up on it and wish they'd integrate the mail program back in it also. At least where it worked better with Comcast.

What do you mean about the mail program? They have one built in. I don't use it much as Thunderbird will die hard for me. But there is one there.

It doesn't work with Comcast email servers without going through Outlook to push the messages. Then you get 2 copies of mail in the app. I added Windows Live Mail which is working pretty nicely but I've yet to figure how out to import my saved contacts file.

Well I stand corrected! After further ado I figured it out in Windows Live Mail.

Pretty impressed with the build so far. Love the one click OC feature with a 20% OC and the desktop access to the BIOS. The push pull airflow seems to be working nicely. I've also got a 140mm Corsair Quiet series fan blowing in from the side panel and will be adding another 120mm as the other 140mm hits the radiator.

What's dumb is that server 2012 is set up to go to desktop by default already. I don't understand why an option to choose wasn't included originally.

:freak7: :fou: :Eyecrazy: :all_coholic:is the only possible explanation, which is strange because when I read the quotes in that article from the MS guy, I don't detect the slightest hint of aloofness or overwhelming ******baggery.

This Samsung SSD is sick fast

Yes it is. It may be the single best component I have ever bought. I boot to Windows 8, and I mean a usable screen in about 8-10 seconds. It is awesome. Even my wife complains about the old desktop that doesn't have an SSD now.

Unfortunately, they went back on that. You can boot straight to the desktop, but there will be no start menu. There will be a new "help" tile smack in the middle of the screen to assist you, though! :cheer:

Oh well. The boot to desktop will be mildly helpful. But I honestly don't miss the start menu. It was an inefficient crutch anyway. 90% of my applications use is represented in either a taskbar shortcut or a metro tile. And the more I think about it, I had migrated away from using the start menu well before 8 came out anyway. The advances in speed and stability are worth the loss of the start menu, for me anyway.

I'm not trying to convert anyone so don't take me as being defensive. I'm just sharing my experience. Have fun with Windows 95 if that's what works for you. I'm liking Windows 8 though. The search function is rocking good, btw.

I'm quite impressed with 8 so far, at least using it with the Start8 app. I know the SSD has a lot to do with it but this is how a PC experience is suppose to be, fast! I've even got programs migrated from Vista that haven't had updates in 5 years running flawlessly.
