Did anyone notice how often the broadcast of last week's game showed the Saints' play calls? I counted ten times that they showed either Sean or Rob calling a play in or showed Drew discussing the photos.

I didn't see them do this even once with the Falcons.

I had noticed this happening before last year, but I kept telling myself that I must be imagining it. This time, I went back and watched the broadcast and kept count.

Sean surely knows from watching games all last year that the broadcast sometimes shows the play being called in, so he must not think that anyone could read his lips enough to know what the call is - or that it wouldn't matter even if people could read his lips. However, it still makes me nervous when they do show it - especially when the play winds up getting stuffed!

Just as in the case when they thought Loomis was listening through devices in his suite. There is not enough time for someone to see the call and get it into a coach and then to the players on the field. And you also have to take in account that the video feed is delayed from real time so in essence the play is already happening before we see them call the play in.

Isn't that why Rob Ryan puts swimsuit models, etc. on his playcards? So they CANT show it on TV?

Sean Payton coming off suspension, Rob Ryan is new to the team. So it was a coverage point.

That's why coaches cover their mouth most of the time when callin plays.

I dont think there can be real time reactions to it. But I bet you every team has high resolution images of those playcards. I have a 120" high def projector setup and a few years back paused the screen and could make out the writing / plays on the back of the cards. At the time I emailed the Saints about it and actually rec'd a reply back that they have considered this as a possibiltiy. So I suspect what we see is a "dummy" play setup on the camera side of the card. This is only me speculating of course I have no real idea.

Why would they bother putting dummy plays on the back of the card? Leaving it blank would accomplish the same thing.

Yeah I don't know. That is what my friend said as well. I told him I have no idea and can't explain it but one thing I think I am confident in is that they wouldn't have their "real" plays on that side. But then again I could be wrong on that as well. I simply don't know and have wondered just like you guys.

I've seen quite often a coach flip their chart around and read a play from the other side. So the dummy plays is highly unlikely.

Think about it. What good would it do a team to read the plays off the play sheet after the fact? They can simply look at the game film and see what plays they called in different situations.

True I don't think it to block calls from those watching TV broadcast.
I think its to prevent those watching "live" from press box with binoculars.

It does a team no good to know the convoluted name of the play which is what is on those cards. They can't hear that from when drew calls it in the huddle anyway.

They get enough information from watching the film and the situational trends wich have been compiled over years of play calling per coach.

Reading a play call and stealing a playbook are two very over using terms.

For one lie someone mentioned the TV is delayed, but even if it is not there is not enough time to "steal the play. Also the game card and the playbook that the coaches use is really not helpful. It is all about verbiage and combining different terms to apply different meanings.

Now the Patriots stealing the other team's signals is another matter. You can steal the defense's signals and call a quick audible.

Why would they show Atlanta's play callers? They aren't very exotic type plays - run it or dump it off to S. Jackson, throw it to Roddy after he has pushed off his D-back, Julio for a bomb down the sideline, Gonzalez for a 3rd down catch or over the goal line for a 4th and goal. Rinse and repeat.
