Zebras are generally despised (and sometimes rightfully so, as the continuous blunders of such referees like Triplette can attest) by the vast majority of fans in almost every sport, however I think that their job is not an easy one and requires great attention to details.

Last week the MMQB website (the one created by Peter King) went behind the scenes with NFL referee Gene Steratore (one of the best, IMHO) and his crew for an unprecedented look at the pressures and responsibilities of the third team on the field on NFL Sundays.

Well, I've diligently read the entire three-part special and I have to say that I was really impressed about the preparation and the scrutiny that goes on with being a ref (for example, they actually watch more game tape than maybe 80/90% of the above mentioned fans!). So I honestly suggest everyone else to read it, too...and then let's just discuss about the "judges". Enjoy:

Well, some of us believe they sit around at a table trying to figure out ways to screw the Saints and make Tom Brady look good.


Then the ignore to head hunting and most of the illegal hits of the 49ers and Seahawks, because Roger took care of that situation with the Saints last year.

The Pats have had to fight bad calls all year too, but none of you pay that any attention after we blew it against them.

We've had our fair share of calls go our way, and it's totally ignored. This can go both ways, and it's a senseless argument.

It really is a funny thing. The truth of the matter is that the refs have been pretty awful across the board this year. We've gotten jobbed, and we've gotten breaks, just like every team in the league. A real challenge would be to research and see who gets the most favourable calls every year. Might actually be really interesting, but that's a lot of time to do something like that. haha.

Every team's fans yell about the officiating, and every team's fans probably believe that they got jobbed. Haha. It is the nature of fandom.

My favorite moment of the season was Mr. Corrente running all the way from the other side of the field demanding that they change the call to the ball being fumbled out of the endzone on White's interception.

That one is a keeper.

I understand your point of view, but I think it's shortsighted. Once again I suggest reading the three-part special, so to discover that being an NFL official is not as easy as it could seem, because everyone of them lives and dies (after endless game tape preparation and heavy scrutiny on calls made or not) with the mistakes made on the field. Moreover, if everyone thinks he could do a better job overall, he's free to try and find out by himself.

They are paid rather hansomely. No pity. Some of the mistakes they make are beyond atrocious. This is supposed to be a league of professionals. They should be better.

I'll say this. Go back to a game that very "favorable" calls went a teams way to help them succeed. Now go to the following week and look at the outcome of that team. Do that to the opponent who got screwed as well. You'll see it evens itself out.
