I just started getting back into fishing last year and realized how much I'd missed it. Unfortunately though, most of my equipment is well past time for replacing and after losing the handle of my one nice reel in the water I've decided it's time to get something a bit better. However, having not spent money on a reel in a really long time, I'm just not that up on what's available and what would be a good buy for me so I could use a little help.

Pretty much all the fishing I do is inshore, barrier islands, bayous and shore fishing. I'll take what I can get, but usually shoot for specks, redfish, flounder etc. Very rarely do I do any freshwater fishing, so I'd be looking for something made for saltwater prefer spinner reels to anything else.

So far, the two reels I have locked in on are the Penn Battle and the Shimano Sedona. I'd like to keep the price under $100, but don't mind going over a little if the quality is big enough a jump to warrant it.

Both of those are decent reels that should serve you well, but I would highly recommend the Quantum Iron Pt Inshore Spinning reels. My battles have been relegated to loaner reels for kids and adults with little experience. I have the 30 size Irons and have never had a problem landing any inshore species; reds, jacks, trout, flounder, sheepshead. You can find them here for a good price. srmo.com: Quantum Reels

If you want a battle, I have a few. One is in pretty much new condition and the others are a little beat up cosmetically. I'll sell you the one in excellent shape for $50. I also have a Daiwa Coastal Inshore 3000 that is practically brand new i'll let go for $60. retails at $120-$129
I just don't use them anymore.

That's a great offer, but I've got a gift card burning a hole in my pocket...

I got an Okuma Cedros with credit card points a few years back and I have used it for everything from bass in City Park to snapper offshore. Price is right around $100 online.

I swear by the Shimano Curado. Been using them for the past dozen years or so. As durable as they come. Pricey, but i've caught them at Academy on black friday a couple of times for under $100. CURADO

I went back this weekend and I'm really liking the Shimano Symetre they have. Like you, I think I'm going to wait until Black Friday and see if I can get it on sale.

Abu Garcia 5500 salt of fresh water. Good long lasting reels I have three that are ten years old and never had any trouble with any of them

Bump this thread... I have a Penn Battle II and I like it. I was into Okuma, but they are made too cheap.

Waited it out till Christmas and the wife got me a Shimano Sahara 4000FE.

This weekend I'm going to try to pick up a new rod to go with it.

Will soon be up in the bayous chasing... :9:
