It was wonderful to watch ole #26 get his 20 carries. Deuce needs 20-25 carries a game to wear down opposing defenses, and he really did his job today. Bush is a great change of pace back/receiver, but Deuce is definitely our best runner. Hopefully, the carry ratio between Deuce/Bush will look more like this for the remainder of the season.

Deuce is good for a couple of TD's a game in this offense with 20 carries a game. Great game for him yesterday.

I thought we got a bit sluggish on offense in the 2nd and 3rd Quarter because we moved away from the pass too much. I think the talent on this team (specifically O-Line) dictates that we be more of a 60/40 passing team. It's obviously when our offense is most effective but comes with an added risk factor.

Deuce's 3.5 yards a carry is still below average......especially with the way we are passing the ball! I guess I'm just not sold on Deuce being better than Bush. IMO, the last 3 games Bush has been the better back running and recieving.

Let me say, I don't want Bush carrying the ball 20 times a game. I just think he should have gotten more carries than he did yesterday.

Good stuff bclemms ... it just felt like we got conservative with that 14 point lead I guess.

That's a nice problem to have when you're the NUMBER ONE team in the entire NFL after 12 weeks in total offense: Having so many weapons and only one ball.

When we were giving Reggie 15 carries and Duece had 10, folks were saying we need to get the ball to Duece more. Now Duece gets 20, and "we need to get Reggie 10-15 carries."

If we get Duece 20 and Reggie 10-15, then we'll hear that "Drew isn't getting the ball to his receivers enough" - Once again, a great problem to have, and one I'm sure Sean doesn't mind.

I trust these coaches and don't care who gets the ball (rushing or receiving), as long as it's balanced and we're winning.

2nd quarter: Deuce 3 rushes. We scored 7 points.
3rd quarter: Deuce 2 rushes. We didn't score.
4th quarter: Deuce 8 rushes. We scored 10 points

Ok, then let`s look at some scoring drives:
1-10-NO21 (14:56) D.McAllister left tackle to NO 22 for 1 yard (E.Hartwell).
2-9-NO22 (14:17) D.McAllister up the middle to NO 24 for 2 yards (L.Milloy).
3-7-NO24 (13:36) (Shotgun) D.Brees pass deep middle to D.Henderson for 76 yards, TOUCHDOWN. PENALTY on ATL-D.Hall, Personal Foul, 15 yards, enforced between downs. Penalty assessed on KO.

Yeah, Deuce really did a great a job. He put us in a hole by averaging 1.5 yards per carry and you actually give him credit for that?

10-NO18 (1:04) (Shotgun) R.Bush up the middle to NO 18 for no gain (J.Mallard, R.Coleman).
2-10-NO18 :)58) (Shotgun) D.Brees pass short left to B.Miller ran ob at NO 21 for 3 yards (A.Rossum).
3-7-NO21 :)51) (Shotgun) D.Brees pass deep left to D.Henderson to NO 48 for 27 yards (L.Milloy). Play Challenged by Review Assistant and Upheld.
1-10-NO48 :)21) (Shotgun) D.Brees pass short right to B.Miller to ATL 48 for 4 yards (A.Rossum).
2-6-ATL48 :)13) (Shotgun) D.Brees pass incomplete deep left to J.Horn.
3-6-ATL48 :)07) (Shotgun) D.Brees pass deep right to T.Copper for 48 yards, TOUCHDOWN.
J.Carney extra point is GOOD, Center-K.Houser, Holder-J.Martin.

What exactly did Deuce do on that drive?

1-10-NO12 (13:49) D.Brees pass short right to M.Campbell to NO 14 for 2 yards (M.Boley, C.Crocker).
2-8-NO14 (13:11) D.Brees pass short right to D.Henderson to NO 23 for 9 yards (A.Rossum).
1-10-NO23 (12:34) D.McAllister left tackle to NO 30 for 7 yards (K.Brooking).
2-3-NO30 (11:53) D.McAllister left tackle to NO 33 for 3 yards (M.Boley).
1-10-NO33 (11:18) D.McAllister left tackle to NO 35 for 2 yards (G.Jackson).
2-8-NO35 (10:37) D.Brees pass deep left to J.Horn to ATL 42 for 23 yards (K.Brooking, E.Hartwell).
1-10-ATL42 (9:54) R.Bush left end pushed ob at ATL 30 for 12 yards (L.Milloy).
1-10-ATL30 (9:25) D.Brees sacked at ATL 38 for -8 yards (E.Hartwell, M.Boley).
PENALTY on ATL-K.Brooking, Face Mask (15 Yards), 15 yards, enforced at ATL 38.
1-10-ATL23 (9:02) D.Brees pass short right to M.Campbell to ATL 22 for 1 yard (M.Boley).
2-9-ATL22 (8:15) D.Brees pass short left to M.Campbell pushed ob at ATL 12 for 10 yards (M.Boley).
1-10-ATL12 (7:55) D.McAllister up the middle to ATL 9 for 3 yards (M.Boley).
2-7-ATL9 (7:20) R.Bush up the middle to ATL 11 for -2 yards (M.Boley).
3-9-ATL11 (6:35) R.Bush up the middle to ATL 8 for 3 yards (K.Brooking).
4-6-ATL8 (5:53) J.Carney 25 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-K.Houser, Holder-J.Martin.

Deuce really had a big impact on that drive. One rush for 7 yards, 3 carries for 3 yards or less...

1-10-NO26 (4:16) D.McAllister up the middle to NO 25 for -1 yards (G.Jackson, C.Davis).
2-11-NO25 (4:09) D.Brees pass deep left to B.Miller to NO 42 for 17 yards (E.Hartwell).
1-10-NO42 (3:26) D.McAllister left tackle to NO 40 for -2 yards (G.Jackson, J.Babineaux).
2-12-NO40 (3:22) D.McAllister right tackle to NO 45 for 5 yards (L.Schulters).
3-7-NO45 (3:16) D.Brees pass deep right to D.Henderson to ATL 9 for 46 yards (A.Rossum).
1-9-ATL9 (2:29) D.McAllister left end for 9 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

Deuce: -1, -2, 5, 9 = 11 yards by Deuce, 63 through the air.

I find formulas along the lines of, "when player X gets the ball Y times, we win," or stats like, "team X wins Y% of the time running back Z rushes for over 100 yards," misleading. These stats are misleading because the reason running back X gets Y touches is because his team had the lead and they had the luxury of running clock, resting their defense and so on. Smart coaches don't focus on getting their back 20+ runs a game when they are losing and it is no longer advisable. In other words, the causality is backwards - it is more accurate to say running back X gets Y touches because his team has the lead, not Running back X's team has the lead because he has Y touches. He wouldn't have Y touches unless they could afford to run.

I do, however, believe in formulas like, "running back X should not touch the ball more than Y times," (because he'll wear down over the course of the season/is coming off of an injury etc.)

Just thought I'd throw in my two cents.

I agree. I wish we had the run-blocking talent/skill to grind it out during the course of the game and not just the fourth quarter, but I think we should continue to gravitate towards what is most effective. Of course, "effective" includes concepts like resting the defense, keeping their D honest etc.

You can't judge deuce on his yards per carry vs. bush because deuce gets the ball in goal line situations can run more than 3 yards if its 2nd and goal from the 3

The one quarter our O failed to move the ball was the 3rd, when we came out passing on first down. We went away from the run in the third, as B Clemms has pointed out, and it hurt. I was yelling at the radio (I was in the car on the way back to Texas after Thanksgiving at my parents' house in River Ridge) during the
3rd quarter, "Run Deuce." I love Payton's aggressiveness, and overall he's the best play caller we've ever had. But he has a tendency after the half to go away from the run. Maybe he sees things from the opposing D in the first half that make him think he can exploit the passing game more and gets pass happy. I was glad to see a return to Deuce along with the use of the tight end in the 4th quarter. I'll say this for Payton--He really does try to utilize all of the talent on the team, and I think he made a concerted effort in the Atlanta game to get Deuce into the mix more (as Jim Henderson has stated).

Let's look at Deuce's stats again. He had 20 carries for 71 Yards. That's an average of 3.5 yards. That's not good. But consider this: If you take away his biggest run to show what he really made on a regular basis then he managed 41 yards on 19 carries, an average of 2.1 yards.

Isn't it obvious why Payton gets away from the run at times? It`s because you can't get down the field by giving the ball to a RB who doesn't even make 3 yards on a regular basis.
