Rumor: PS4.5 to have twice as powerful GPU; Deep Down and God of War 4 among launch titles

by Sal Romano at 03:32 PM EDT, March 30, 2016.

New information reportedly leaked.

PlayStation 4.5

A NeoGAF user named OsirisBlack has posted what he claims is a handful of information about the rumored 4K PlayStation 4 from a meeting held yesterday.

The user’s sources are verified by NeoGAF’s moderators. While this doesn’t necessarily mean the information is correct, it means that they have verified OsirisBlack as someone who would have access to this information.

Here are the details:

Price and Trade-Ins

The price is currently $399. There were discussions about including a better CPU, which would raise the price to $499, a price that is guaranteed to be the maximum amount one might have to pay for the upgraded console.

There are currently no plans for a trade-in program for PlayStation 4 owners, but that could change.

GPU and Blu-ray Player

The GPU is twice as powerful as the current PlayStation 4 and much faster. It runs at higher clock speed and is much smaller than the original.

It will have a 4K Blu-ray player and upscale games that are not 4K-native. (This is not to say that newer games will run 4K-native.)

Media Player Application

There is talk of a “VR Lounge” for the Media Player application, which will be getting a substantial upgrade.

Dev Kits and Existing Games

Developers already have development kits for the new PlayStation 4 and are making games that will directly target and take advantage of its higher specs. These games will work on the current PlayStation 4, but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.

Any upgrades (for current games) that come would do so via game-specific patches released by developers

I was going to buy one in May for UC4 but if this is going to be announced just before or during E3 (as the scuttlebutt suggests) I might hold out. It would make sense since once this IS announced all sales of PS4 will freeze without a significant price drop.

As current PS4 owners, would it bother you if they don't introduce a trade in program?

What is the point of the 4k PS4? Very few people own a 4k TV and it really isn't necessary.

Pfft. 4k is glorious.

Maybe, although IDGAF about picture quality once it gets to a certain point. But my point is that so few people own 4K TVs at this point that Sony is risking pissing off a lot of people who own PS4's while not really expanding their market share to any significant degree.

Why would someone be ****** off if they can't trade in for something that they don't need?

Well Sony owns the Blu-ray technology that 4K video will be printed on. If their flagship device isn't updated to support that then it stunts the growth of that medium for a further five years or however long the expected lifecycle of this console was supposed to be. Since they've discovered that pricing can be cheaper on better GPU components, why not make it upscale games to 4K? It won't be NATIVE 4K and that will be obvious, but to make a console that could do that would be well over $1000.

However, and I know you don't really care about this Widge, games that will play on the new PS 4.5 will play at 1080P and 60 frames per second which is a huge benefit to user experience. Those same new games will likely run at a reduced resolution and 30 fps on the current model (as stated in the article).

There's a lot to be excited about. Console gaming is finally getting some up to date specs that unquestionably improve the user experience. Thank you VR technology.

This post makes zero sense.

I'm not talking about the trade-in issue. What they are trying to do is speed up the generation cycle/upgrade cycle the same way that it works on PCs. If they are going to do that then it will no longer make sense to play on a console. One of the biggest advantages of console gaming is that you usally get a 5 or 6 year cycle with that new console and you don't have to upgrade to stay current. If they start a trend of releasing a .5 version of consoles in between actual real generations, it messes up that advantage. If becomes like the iPhone where you only have current equipment for year before they release the "s" version of the phone.

I mean, they call call it PS 4.5 if they want, but the reality is that it will be the PS 5 being released within two years of the release of the PS 4. That's an unsustainable generational cycle for a luxury item like a console gaming system.

I don't care for the idea. Maybe in a few years when the life cycle is near a close. But, will you now have split PS4 capabilities/compatibility issues with games? Will some games be developed for the PS4.5, then be dumbed down for the PS4, like what they did with the PS3 for Battlefield 4 (ran like hot garbage).

I really don't care about 4k gaming. Now, can they just add 4k streaming for video services with a patch or does it require more hardware?

The other thing, I'm not that big on 4k anything, especially if it's online/streaming, since Comcast is an arse and caps data at 300GB, unless you pay for unlimited (in the few areas it's available).

Not to mention, I don't own a 4k TV.

I'm not terribly excited about this. I love the capability of the PS4 right now. Games are great on it. It's far more powerful than the PS3. I don't see the need to update already.

If this happens, console gaming is getting the same crap that PC gaming has had for years. i.e. useless and costly graphical upgrades that do not really effect the enjoyment of gaming and only make gaming more expensive. And, pushing Blu-Ray with the PlayStation is when made Sony lose the console battle in the last generation. It appeared that they had learned their lesson in this generation, but now they are going to risk their big lead in console sales so they can push the 4K capabilities of Blu-Ray? That seems to be the hubris before the fall.

Probably the most successful game in the last 20 years that has had the largest cultural impact is Minecraft and ti uses 64 bit graphics. Gaming is not made better by higher frame rates or more pixels on the screen. We don't need prettier pictures, we need better and more interesting games. That's the lesson that should have been learned from Minecraft, but people like you are so dumb they are stuck staring blankly at pretty pictures on the screen.

But I don't think anyone has said that the capabilities of the machines or games would be significantly different other than the 4k capabilities of the 's' model. If there isn't a compatibility issue, you might as well let the select group of those who choose to upgrade to the better video quality.

It's not like PC at all where the current system is out of date. And anyway, there is already precedent for incremental console upgrades - PS2 and PS3 both came out with "slim" versions with improved hardware, and the xbox 360 continually stepped up the hardware built in to the system after the RROD debacle.

You didn't get a PS4 until 10 years after it came out, so of course your electronics would be antique.

Also, :mecry:
