We’re announcing our intent to have fully autonomous vehicles in commercial operation for a ride-hailing or ride-sharing service beginning in 2021. This is significant. Ford will be mass producing vehicles capable of driving fully autonomously within five years. No steering wheel. No gas pedals. No brake pedals. A driver will not be required.

Seems a bit ambitious, but I've heard 2017 from some other niche companies who are trying to get into specific city markets. With Moore's law seemingly migrating to every device known to man, I wonder if they will actually be able to pull this off.

That would be quite useful for folks like me who can't see well enough to drive. *fingerscrossed*

In our lifetime we will have laws that make it illegal to drive your own car in metropolitan areas. Sunday driving will again become a pastime as urban dwellers seek the thrill and freedom of controlling your own vehicle.

I do not doubt having the the technology to do this but just can not see this working when mixed in with human operated vehicles. If we could remove all current transportation and replace it all at one time, it could work.

These vehicles will be able to react and perform much better than human driven cars. If a puppy runs into the street, these cars will stop at a much faster rate than the human driver behind it. What will be the safe following distance? Can almost see the lawsuits already.

It has a lot of potential. Vehicles acting as a train. Reduced traffic. More efficient movement. Just not sure how the transition will go down.

I can't believe someone would red thumb this. Having the freedom to get in MY vehicle and simply go wherever, whenever, without having to rely on others has been a lifelong dream of mine. I can not fathom what that kind of freedom would,be like.

I would imagine that was a fat fingered red thumb.

I think that it's very possible to incorporate both types of vehicles during the transition. The same way that it can react so much faster to a puppy running into the street, it can react to an unexpected human based maneuver. We tend to think in terms of seconds for such an event, but a computer is thinking in nanoseconds. We can lose sight of objects or focus, a computer never does.

I've heard an NPR story on the insurance aspect. Most agencies are looking to go with an no fault accident for two autonomous vehicles. You'd be hard pressed as a human to prove it wasn't your fault with all of the data available from the other vehicle. Then again, maybe if it wasn't that would be a blessing.

I see a worst case of adapters for older vehicles to communicate with never ones what they are doing, although not driving the vehicle, and selective roads/speeds for non-autonomous cars.

I can imagine it now. Streets and traffic plans will begin to be optimized with automated cars in mind. Then a software system will be developed to interact with all automated cars so they can interact with driving conditions universally in the area. Then some city on the west coast will get the ball rolling by proposing that only cars that are automated and live on this system should be allowed in their metro area as humans are not predictable enough to safely be accounted for in the software. Hilarity ensues.

But I don't think these cars will be completely without the ability to be driven. I think more popular models will be a hybrid of sorts that can still be manually operated.

as a father of an 8 yr old, automated cars can't come fast enough

Just wait until the sidewalks move at the same rate as the vehicle so you can get out without stopping. Talk about efficiency!
