For the TEAM. Extremely cap friendly. only 44 million guaranteed . Shows he wants to win another ring over getting every $ he could . All you Brees is selfish and should take a pay cut like Brady people can shove it

The PFT trolls won't know what to do with themselves.

I never understand how the prevailing narrative was that Brady was so selfless when his restructures paid him more and ate up more cap space in the long run for the patriots.

But yeah this deal helps the organization a lot so from a numbers perspective it seems really beneficial for all involved on the surface.

the only thing that is strange to me is why sign a 5yr extension that automatically(?) voids after 2 years? Can someone explain to me what they gained by making it 5 years instead of just 2?

The deal contains a signing bonus that will pro-rate over five years, lowering the cap hit for the first two years.

The Saints will have to account for the dead money on their cap when the deal voids, so it isn't free money, but it helps with short-term cap management.

I think it's a loophole Loomis has been using. It lessens the cap hit yearly. I don't know for sure though.
Edit: you beat me to it.

Here.
Yes. But that's the point.

This is what the Patriots did with Brady. He signed a long 5 year extension, but every two years they are redoing it and giving Brady more guaranteed money for the coming seasons.

I think that's the structure we want. It allows us to let Brees retire if it comes to that with little dead money hit (relatively speaking). Or, we simply covert a large chunk of salary into guaranteed after two years and he continues to play on this deal.

This deal will likely never actually be allowed to void. The void date is the deadline to get future negotiations done on giving him more guaranteed down the line.

Also, as the salary cap increases each year, wouldn't the dead money be less impactful to the Saints?

yes.

keep in mind Galettes "dead money" ends after this season.
