Are you out of your blessed mind, Newt? (2 Viewers)

More and more I see this "terrorism threat" as an excuse for the gov't to take personal freedoms away from citizens.
Again, it is all of these dinosaurs in power who can let go of the "old school" mentality.

Of course, being that the press is viewed as being liberal or downright leftist, the partisans will not see a problem with that.

But just wait until they start advocating gun control as a means of "fighting the war on terrorism".

Man, I'm so sick of these people stepping all over my rights as an American, I think I'll go puke up my lunch now!

Newt is raising an issue that we do have to examine - our own media publishing enemy propaganda as news.

Did you hear about the six Sunni men burned alive in Iraq? It was in all the major newspapers and broadcast media.

PROBLEM: It never happened.

“Iraqi police Capt. Jamil Hussein,” cited as a source (often the only source) in a long string of media articles about murders and atrocities in Iraq (including the recent report of 6 people burned alive), is not a police officer, nor is he employed by Iraq’s Interior Ministry: Getting The News From The Enemy (Updated).

>>Gingrich said he will not decide whether he is running for President until September 2007.

Uh, he means he won't annouce it until then. I mean really, I think I'm not going to decide to find another job until October, 2013.

U.S. News and World Report ran a cover picture of a Hezbollah gunman standing in front of a "downed Isreali jet" burning in the background. Turned out it was a pile of burning tires.

The photographer denounced the misuse of his picture. Reuters had provided their own "downed Isreali jet" caption to Time Magazine, U.S. News and literally thousands of news outlets worldwide.

Oh, let's not forget the faked pics of the ambulance in Beruit or pics of the guy who took a dead kid out of an ambulance and "discovered" her buried under rubble from an Isreali strike and paraded the poor child's body around for photographers.

Frankly, I'm more worried about this government going after more 1st amendment rights than photoshopped pics in the media.

the issue isnt free speech when it comes to news media publishing invalid or untrue stories -

thats more about responsible journalism, tv ratings and newspaper sales.

giving up our rights is just as much of as a "defeat" as losing the war, only the defeat will be in our way of life here on our home soil - terrorist 1, USA 0

Is that from another speech? According to the article in this one he says:

Gingrich, speaking at a Manchester awards banquet, said a "different set of rules" may be needed to reduce terrorists' ability to use the Internet and free speech to recruit and get out their message.

That sounds like curtailing the rights of citizens and doesn't even mention the media.

Yeah, but how did we find out that these stories were bogus and to be disregarded? Al-Jazeera debunking a Time Magazine story in one case. Perhaps a western media co debunking Al-Jazeera in the next, I don't know. What happens if the government steps in, does the first version of every story they let us read become accepted fact?

"SIGH." :help-sos:

More and more I see this "terrorism threat" as an excuse for the gov't to take personal freedoms away from citizens.

Such sentiments always remind me of the Ben Franklin quote, "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." (The Papers of Benjamin Franklin, ed. Leonard W. Labaree, vol. 6, p. 242 (1963).

Certainly our times have changed and we face dangers our founding fathers couldn't imagine, but how far do we go before the very beliefs we are founded on, celebrate, and use as cause to promote Democracy are eroded to the point that we're not much different from the ideals we stand against and the enemies we fear?

Save the condescending BS for a time when you actually have a valid point OR actually show me where Newt said anything like what your claiming.

I swear this place used to be the best place on the net for intelligent discussion. Now it's just become a place for people to test how big their e-jock is and the stupidity quota has exceeded the decent discussion by about 50 times.

A great quote indeed ... government will always inherently attempt to garner more power.

I am I the only here that thinks the scary part of that article is Gingrich saying he wants to fight Syria and Iran now?
