With all of the negativity on the board, I figured I'd highlight some encouraging play as well.

The good:

Drew Brees. This was one of his better games in recent memory. He was absolutely on fire. The 98 yard TD will get much more publicity, but the first Cooks TD was much more impressive. It was a dime down the seams. Vintage Brees.

Cooks-Snead-Thomas. I'm saying it now, this is the best group of receivers Brees has ever thrown to. Better than Colston-Meachem-Henderson. These guys catch everything. Snead is Jarvis Landry without the fan fare. He just wants it more than the defender.

Kenny Vacarro. Absolutely loved the way Allen used him. He played deep safety, MLB, and slot corner. 7 tackles, 2 PDs, a QB hit, and a TFL, but even those stats don't tell the whole story. Vacarro was everywhere.

PJ Williams. I'm putting him here, not because he was spectacular, but because he was solid in his first NFL game. PFF says he allowed 4 of 8 passes thrown his way to be completed, a good percentage, but also credited him with giving up nearly 100 yards (I think 30 of those were on a blown coverage by the linebackers, but what do I know). Solid game for a young guy we're going to expect a lot out of now that Breaux is out.

The oline. Opened up huge holes in the run game. Brees was only pressured on 16% of his dropbacks as well. Mack was non existent, no matter which side he lined up on. Peat got to the second level in the run game quite a few times and blew up linebackers. The majority of the big runs went left, behind Armstead and Peat.

The bad:

Dline. No pressure. Zero. Zilch. Carr was hit 3 times. 3. Times. Jordan was doubled all day. They weren't going to let him get to Carr. The interior was the most dissapointing. Fairley had a few run stops, but he and Davison got no push in the middle. Kruger was invisible. Have to get better here, especially with the group of young corners back there.

Ken Crawley. PFF says Carr had a 148 QB rating when throwing into Crawleys coverage, which is about what I'd expect. He clearly wasn't ready to be thrust into the lineup, but he made Crabtree look like Julio. The 2 point conversion was terrible. Crabtree looked like he was covered by a high schooler.

Jairus Byrd. I thought he had a decent year last year, once he got on the field, but he had a bad first outing. Those 2 30 yard plays to Cooper in the middle of the field are plays you expect Byrd to stop. I've been a supporter, because of his health, but we need better production for the money.

Annual defensive checklist

No pass rush -CHECK
One cornerback which is a first down machine for opposing teams - CHECK
Weak/slow LB's - CHECK

What is the definition of insanity?

Good post. Brees was absolutely on fire and our WR core looks as good as ever. Cooks has really become a great receiver, Snead was Snead on steroids, and Thomas had a solid first game and showed some moves to get that first.

Defense needs one good corner and ANYONE who can push the pocket from the middle. Really missing Rankins and all the others who are out.

Good Post. I was watching Bird as much as possible and it is like we are playing with 10 guys on D. He has the amazing talent to be at least 5 yards away from every play. We need to give Bell or E. Harris a shot.

Not going to go as far as saying I want him benched just yet, but I was dissapointed yesterday. It was discouraging to watch the tipped ball by Robertson, in the red zone, that hung in the air forever, just harmlessly hit yhe ground. Those are the balls you pay him to intercept.

I'll give him a few more weeks before I call for his spot, but yesterday was dissapointing, because I felt like he had chances to make plays.

oh and Payton still has no clue on how to save his timeouts. We sure could have use one or two on that last drive.

I blame the last one on the refs. Payton was upset about it, but their failure to make a call, or at least stop the clock to discuss it, was pretty irritating.

I didn't mind the time out before the 4th down play. It was a big play. Needed to get it right. I don't remember when the other was taken. A time out would have been nice though.

I seen him on the sidelines multiple times with ice on his knee,. is he still having issues?

Did Kruger even play this game?

Agreed on Vacarro. This is what he is best at and is the role he needs to play. Legitimate question though: Will he be able to maintain that role or are we going to need him to play slot corner and provide support? I'm hoping Harris/Crawley learn from their mistakes and step up in a big way. PJ was supposed to be a first rounder and he looked pretty solid out there for a first game. If not, we just need a couple of competent and solid corners to let Vacarro roam.

Yes, looked incredibly slow trying to bull rush (unsuccessfully) the tackle he was lined up against.

To be fair to Kruger, he hasn't played with his hand in the dirt since college. I think it would benefit him to be able to rush from an OLB position. I liked when they would line Jordan up inside and have Kruger outside of him, just think you'd get better results if you let him stand up.

Spot on.

I'd like to add a couple of bads though.

Spiller. Why was he inactive vs "No-Threat" Cadet?

Linebackers unit. Okay maybe it's unfair to say bad. How about disappointing? We've gone too long without impact plays from linebackers.
