1) Once again he was really surprised by Brees. "The injuries to Brees over the last 2 years are usually a massive sign of decline." He said that Brees arm looked lively and Brees can still pick apart a defense with the best of all time. He said after what Brees overcame when leaving SD, he really shouldn't be surprised by Brees being the rare exception.
2) Very surprised by our O-line. Raiders have a lot of speed on their D-line and our O-line handled them well. At end of last year and during the offseason, he thought the Saints had one of the weakest O-lines in the league. He now thinks this is a good O-line
3) When Breaux went down that was the straw that broke our defense's back. He likes the way our defense played, but he said the biggest problem that worries him is the lack of penetration by the D-line. If we can't fix that quickly, most teams will put up a lot of points on us. He noted that one of the things he clearly saw throughout the league yesterday is the number of teams with big, fast quality WRs and that many of the QBs were very successful with bombs. He thinks this is a trend till defenses adjust
4) Saints young WRs are one of the best units in the NFL. Loves Cooks and thinks Thomas will be elite. Has no opinion on Fleener, but said, "Give it time before judgement."
5) Thinks the Saints will be very exciting to watch this year and most games will be back and forth track meets.
6) Thinks Byrd is just playing for the money. He was very disappointed in his play and noted that he shied away from contact and was not aggressive at all playing way too far off the LOS and then backing up further. Thought his attitude and lack of toughness on the field was a real problem for chemistry with all the money he makes and thinks the Saints should replace him asap with Bell or the Canadian kid.
7) Overall, he was pretty sure after last year that the Saints were on the way down, but now thinks this may be quick and exciting rebuild. He was impressed with our young CBs and said a good, fast, penetrating D-line would make the secondary look a lot better

What do you think of his Saints analysis?

I could not agree more with this. Playing with Byrd is like playing with 10 men on the field.

I agree...

I was a huge Byrd supporter as well but after yesterday the dude is just invisible out there. What's crazy is Byrd lines up like 25 yards deep and still can't make a play and get to a damn deep ball. Like WTH....

I say insert Harris or Bell, someone who looks like they actually care.

del Rio punked d.allen ,in a big way :covri:....the raiders are getting slobbered on by the media :jpshakehead:

I noticed that as well. It's very tough to watch these "Sports shows". The saints owned them for 3 QTRS. Then we collapse in that last QTR. Tough to swallow. But I have faith we will rebound.

I haven't seen anything to indicate he was anywhere worth 56 million

Is that scheme or choice? We're giving Byrd a hard time (and maybe rightfully so) but maybe Allen had him back there to help out the young corners. Not sure if it really helped because we still gave up some big plays. Were the big plays before or after Breaux went out?

Definitely factors.

D line is not a new problem. Remains to be seen if Rankins can bring that and if he doesn't isn't it time to consider the coaching?

If Byrd doesn't show something soon time to sit him and write him off. Seems that are playing him mainly because of what they paid him not because of what he's doing on the field. He totally whiffed on that long TD run.

These are the kinds of obvious decision that don't get made that have eroded my faith.

What does he think our regular season record will be

I agree with his take. Offense looked sharp, Brees doing his thing as expected and all 3 main WRs taking care of business. The O line was a big surprise, Strief stepped up and Peat is settling in at LG, with Evans back we can maybe breathe a sigh of relief here. I will also add that Ingram looked really good he is primed for a big year if he can get enough touches.

The D line was the biggest weakness for the Saints. I don't blame Payton for the CB situation nobody could have predicted Lewis, Wilson, and Swann all going down before the season started.

It's more than this 1 game with Byrd. He has been non-factor since he signed here. I just think it's him to be honest. Eventually you have to call a spade a spade. And most of their offense came after Breaux got hurt. Crawley looked like an undrafted rookie which is what he is.
The coached could have kept Finnegan, who's a vet, and put Crawley on the PS. But that's not the route they went and it hurt us. With all this being said I was so happy to see KV return to how he played like a rookie. he was balling out there.

I also will say this. The saints had no pass rush what so ever. That goes hand in hand with how your DB's play. We need Jordan, Fairley, Kruger and the rest of the guys to step up week 2. Can't let Eli have all day with those Receivers he has.

Don't think he whiffed as much as he was caught out of position. It was one of the lone plays where he was 20 yards deep in center field.

A couple of running 1st downs by Ingram and Hightower in the 4th quarter would have made our defense look a lot better.
