In your opinion, when Rankins returns is he good enough that he can get to the QB (and possibly harass the QB, maybe even slightly touch the QB? Unlike our Dline this past week :jpshakehead:) Then attention gets focused on him and therefore opens it up for the rest of the Dline?

What do you think? Is he going to make a significant impact? It's just shocking that even with the Raiders Oline BACKUPS playing we couldn't even get past the line of scrimmage! Is Rankins going to change all that?

I don't think it was just a bad outing. It was downright inexcusable that we didn't get to the QB even once.

well, we won't know that until at least the second game kicks off. i'm a glass half full kinda guy who thinks that it wasn't by accident that we held them to 10 points before Breaux went down and then everything that killed us was thrown Crawley's way.

Yes, it's ****** that we got no sacks. I do think that changes this week.

It couldn't hurt. The issue is as a rookie, he needed the reps in a live game against NFL players to develop his moves against elite competition.

The injury set back his learning curve and will likely affect his strength and stamina. Assuming no setbacks, I expect a fully operational Rankins next season.

:covri: I think you're spot on.

I'm interested to see more of these 3-4 sets when Rankin's comes back. I noticed we had Fairley at the nose obviously as a penetrating nose and I can't help but think that being a bit smaller and quicker Rankins would create some quick pressure.

I'm also realizing at the same time why Anthony didn't see many snaps and its because we didn't play much 4-3. We played more 3-4 and Kruger in drops> Anthony due to his experience playing the position.

When Rankins gets back we'll see some juice from him but until we get some elite edge pressure its going to be a long season.

Watching the replay and Kruger absolutely manhandled donald penn at times in the run game.

He is a rookie and will only have a couple of weeks to get back into 'football' shape before he has to be activated. I believe we won't see that much impact when he returns, but he will get valuable experience as a rotational guy the remainder of the season. Our problems on the DL are far greater than one rookie player unfortunately!

Disappointing yes, inexcusable, that's debatable. By comparison, the vaunted Raider pass rush only sacked Brees once, and that was his fault for holding the ball too long. I would guess that a Raiders fan would feel the same about our Oline as we did theirs when they had to shuffle due to injury. We signed a guard off of the street and he started for us, and we had Peat starting at LG so our Oline was expected to give up a ton of sacks, but they played reasonably well. I am in no way saying that our pass rush was good enough, especially with our inexperienced corners, but, the other guys get paid too.

We'll have a pass rush this week against the Giants, just watch! Calling Cam Jordan, Nick Fairley, Kruger, etc. Time to step up!

I hate being a pessimist but the question is When is he coming back? I know he has to miss at least 8 weeks. There hasn't been much talk as to how his recovery is going and it's been at least 3 weeks...If he has any sort of setback the Saints can just hold him out until next season...I also believe our record may play apart of the decision making process on this as well.

What I want to know is why was Gwatchem inactive? He may have been the one to help our pass rush. I think once Rankins gets back and gets back into football shape he will have some impact on defense.

I would imagine so. His MO is pressure up the middle. That's why we drafted him.

sure. why not? i refuse to give up on this team after one bad outing.

It's not really ONE bad outing, though. It's been like that for a few years now. A lot of people are really down on this team after only one game because that Raiders game looked EXACTLY like so many of the games we've seen over the last few years. Offense plays great, though not enough rushing in the fourth quarter, defense gags up the game at the end, we score 30 plus and it's not good enough. It truly feels like we picked up right where we left off doing the same old crap.
