I figured with so many freaking out on the other thread I would give this it's own thread.

2016 creates an additional $5mil in dead money on paper it looks bad but at this point it doesn't hurt the team in 2016 since there isn't anyone worth 5mil that we would sign at this point.

In 2017 and 2018 it's creates $1.25mil in dead money since it is a post June 1st cut. Pre June would have been $2.5mil next year and $1.25 still for 2018.

Now the good news in 2017 the moves creates an additional $3.6mil in cap space and $3.4mil in 2018 which will help in free agency when they go looking for a top guard.

When you use the link make sure to click on the tab for post June 1st cut with the offset would could get back up to $1.6mil in cap when he is signed by another team

now you know for SURE one of the running backs is getting injured next week. we have bad karma....

Posted in the other thread, but this is some info from PFT about possible salary implications for 2016:

He has a $1.7 million 2016 salary, which with one game check earned means that $1.6 million remains. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the contract includes offset language. Thus, the Saints will get credit for the first $1.6 million he earns in 2016 salary elsewhere.

The fact that he was cut almost immediately after we freed up enough space to eat his hit this year says that we've been wanting him gone for a while but couldn't afford it.

This is a total waste of talent and money. In the grand scheme, we eat his 7 million in dead money this season, lose 2.5 million in space, but get it back next year. So this isn't hurting us in the future. But we are doing all that for a player who isn't even on the team anymore. Another in the long line.

This has to stop.

and i remember laughing at all the other teams like the cowboys for carrying so much dead cap space, the other shoe has dropped

Does the 5 million in dead space this year reduce the 13 million that we could carry over to next year?

It's 7 million in dead from what I see.

And the answer is yes. It cuts into our cap 2.5 million this year + we eat the 4.5 million already allotted.

We gain that back in savings from his 3.1 million base next year which we no longer have to account for. Plus, if DavidM is correct, we recoup another 1.6 million if he plays for another team and makes that much or more in 2016.

So this will put us slightly ahead in terms of the cap next season compared to if we kept him, even with losing some space this season. But it's still a waste IMO.

Bonchie -I am with you 100%. But to fix this now long-standing problem with very poor FA picks, salary increases to locker room toxins and weak drafting, I don't think a band-aid will work. We need major moves in the FO. We have to have someone who can bring football and player business savvy back into the FO, and also someone in position and will-power to challenge SP.

I still think SP is a great coach. But he needs development in certain areas and that will only happen if he has a peer in the FO who can fight his whims on equal ground.

I saw Hopkins kick last night. How could any coach in their right mind pick Forbath over Hopkins. Hopkins has perfect form, a very quick release, quick high elevation and nails kicks dead center.

It's not really good news because obviously our front office gurus only know how to pic 'losers' in free agency (meaning this new money will most likely end up in the same place).

Spiller and Byrd were big whiffs but this is the same front office that brought in Breaux last year and Lauranitis, Robertson, Stupar, Fairly and Kruger. No team hits 100% in free agency or the draft right now it looks to me like they are setting up for next year. We have a lot of pieces in place and not that many holes, albeit the holes we have are huge but with the freed up cap space for next season they can be big players in FA.

I can hardly wait for the next big money contract we go after that turns into dead money. Will it be a guard, a cb, maybe a lb. I am so anxious to find out who it will be.:hihi:

Dollars to doughnuts its a player from Buffalo.

When they overhauled the college scouting dept. and brought in Ireland they probably should've looked at the pro personnel guy (name escapes me) as well. Either that or SP has too much say over these FA acquisitions. Or both.
