Posted a few of these up last season and they seemed to go down quite well - so with regular season football now back in full swing, thought I'd post up the link (above) to our individual player grades, snap counts (including run/pass split) and analysis for the Saints Week 1 game against Oakland.

Feel free to fire any questions and/or call out any of the grades below! We're more than happy to debate all of it on here so will keep checking back on this thread.

Hope some of y'all find it interesting... (or the read at least helps pass some time until the Giants game!).

Interesting and disappointing information about Anthony. This is another head scratcher. Mauti is definitely not the better player, so Anthony should be playing ahead of him. Heck, if Mauti is more reliable than Anthony at SLB, then after the disappointing effort by Laurinaitis, I'd rather see a lot more of Anthony at MLB. At least let them platoon at MLB.

I don't get what they're doing with Anthony. Saints have no idea how to put their players in the best possible situation so they can succeed. Its nothing but confusion.

He is coming off of an injury... maybe there is something to that... easing him back?? Purely speculation

Thanks all. I'm really hoping that the Anthony snap count was purely injury related. It's hard to tell, though. Dennis Allen has already relieved Anthony of his MLB duties, so maybe he has deeper reservations about him still...

There's no sign of Anthony on the injury report and it seems he's practising in full this week, so the Giants game should give us a good idea as to whether last week was a (possibly injury-related) one-off. In his few snaps out there against Oakland, Anthony actually looked sharp - much sharper than in his "between injury" appearances in the preseason. So hopefully he's a full-go this week. Love Mauti's heart and effort, but he's not a starting calibre LB.

The whole LB situation is a bit of a puzzle at the moment. When Ellerbe is back it should all become a bit clearer. Although the phrase "when Ellerbe is back" is becoming a bit of a cliche now in itself...

Meanwhile, Kendricks is progressing nicely for the Vikings. Why on earth, did we have to slide Anthony over, and sign that weak JL? Let a man take his lumps, learn from those mistakes, but let him know that we have confidence in him. Now our 1st rd pick, who flashed/made "impact" plays (things 98% of our defense doesn't do) last year, is on a limited snap count, and a completely different position.

Let a man take his lumps, learn from those mistakes, but let him know that we have confidence in him. Now our 1st rd pick, who flashed/made "impact" plays (things 98% of our defense doesn't do) last year, is on a limited snap count, and a completely different position.

He flashed and made impact plays, but had absolutely no idea how to set the defense. He struggled in recognizing offensive plays and lead to the mass confusion you saw on the field when the defense could not attempt to line up correctly pre-snap.

They realized it might take a bit longer for him to get the mental chess game down and dialed back his responsibilities. They brought in Laurinaitis to be that guy and we seem to at least be set before the snap.

Anthony will be that guy long term, but for now they are putting him in a position to hopefully make some plays and learn behind one of the better MLB's in the league (mentally).

People want vets at corner because we have young guys without experience there. Saints have a experienced guy at MLB but people want the younger guy playing. I guess people always want what they don't have.

The results with Laurinitis at MLB were not compelling.

If it were up to me, I'd start Anthony there and know that at least I've got a player who is physically capable of doing the job.

He took his lumps last year. He was statistically very good, but the defense as a whole suffered. He needs a bit of time to acclimate to the outside, but he has the physical ability to be very good there once he settled in. One game does not a position change invalidate.
