N/S Owners Have Approached NFLPA About Extending CBA (1 Viewer)

Hahaha, after the shafting the players took through this current CBA in regards to suspensions and appeals, no way in hell the NFLPA accepts that without a massive overhaul in the language.

The NFL and the owners really think the NFLPA is that dumb.

I don't think so either...

They are the worst run union in American Sports... So. Yes. They are that dumb.

This is nothing but the owners trying to look good to the public. They know the NFLPA would never agree to this.

So as a player what do you give up to get that?

Perhaps. Or maybe Goodell & the owners see the handwriting on the wall for the next CBA agreement and are jockeying for leverage, cuz they currently have next to none.

Perhaps this is the owners & Goodell setting the table to make the argument that viewership is down because of the fan anxiety that the NFLPA will strike when the current CBA expires. And the reduced viewership, therefore, will result in lower TV contract revenue, which will result in a lower portion of NFLPA revenue and lowered salary caps/player salaries. The NFL made this move knowing the NFLPA would never agree to an extension of the current agreement. And the next offer will be for less money, for reasons cited above. But now the NFL/Goodell can point to THIS offer to extend and say with a straight face, "you shoulda took the previous offer when you had the chance."

I can honestly say GREED is killing the NFL that I used to love. I used to crave more; I used to plan my Sundays around watching football. But everything that "hooked" me on football is slowly being taken away. And I don't know that it's ever coming back again. The only thing keeping me in the fold right now is the Saints...

So as a player what do you give up to get that?

i think the players will try to show they got hosed last time and that it's the owners that need to give up stuff to get back to balance

and i don't know if it's that the union is dumb, t's that the bulk of its members know they have a VERY limited window to play/make their money
- there are way more bubble ST guys than elites QBs with a decade long career - the bottom roster guys have very little incentive to go into full labor battle

The response should go something like this:

Dear NFL,

Have you "retired" Roger yet?

Best regards,
NFLPA

I realize Goodell is primarily the hatchet man for the more influential owners and still has the favor of most but I'll be surprised if his contract is re-upped before the next CBA (or a continuation) gets settled. Maybe if his powers get further trimmed back...I just think relations are pretty toxic and there isn't enough time to cool down as his contract comes to a close in 2018.

I think everyone one in here has hit the nail on the head.....I totally see a work stoppage happening in the future. The bottom roster guys get treated pretty bad if you think about it. Can you imagine being Andy Tanner, Khalif Barnes and other players like that all over.....cut and brought back so many times without having a guaranteed salary. They cut you before the season starts so they don't have to pay you all year after you have been in training camp the whole time. The NFL is brutal TBH.....If I was a bubble player putting my body on the line like that I definitely would want some kind of change.

you make a great point here that I have honestly never considered...until now. but it makes perfect sense and actually explains a lot. owners are thinking long-term....cash flow considerations to fulfill 20+ year mortgage terms, plus ongoing operational expenses. players are thinking short-term...for the rest of their playing careers...typically 3 years or less! Guys with 5-10 year playing careers probably only comprise about 25% of the NFLPA (just a guess on my part), with 15-20 year careers truly in the extreme minority...perhaps only 1%-2% (again, just guessing). Furthermore, even the guys with the longer careers are only thinking short-term, because any injury tomorrow could be career ending. So players are all about getting as much as they can NOW, choosing to worry about tomorrow when tomorrow gets here...or letting the next wave of players deal with tomorrow.

Owners, on the other hand, are almost certainly going to own their teams 20+ years from now. And even owners who might be contemplating a sale, are still incentivized to jack the near-term cash flow in order to raise the near-term NOI, which raises the value/sale price of the franchise. But then the new guy incurs previously inexperienced levels of debt service/leverage, and feels the need to further ratchet NOI up. And the cycle continues.

They'd be idiots. The current CBA is ruining the game. Product is bad, play is bad, and the players got hosed on the money deals. All because they wanted less practice time..and air conditioning during TC
