I'd like to get a little recognition and discussion going for what appears to be an improved defensive line. I don't know much about it or why. But the defense seems to be getting to the quarterback and really disrupting them. Cam missed several throws due to the pressure and rarely had a clean pocket. It's really encouraging, especially if we can add Rankins and get Breaux back.

Does anyone have an analysis of whats going on? Is it scheme? Are our players getting better?

I believe our defense is getting more comfortable with the scheme and also the young rookies are learning each week and getting better. We still have a lot of work to do though. Once we get Rankins, Ellerbe and Breaux back, I believe we will improve even more.

This defense plays well here and there but seemingly rarely strings together three good plays in a row.

You are right, the pressure was there yesterday. What I noticed is that it wasn't coming from one player. A sack might get awarded to one guy, but there were two or three other players collapsing the pocket and bearing down on Newton in order to make those sacks happen. Truly a team effort. Fairely, Jordan, and Edabli in particular.

Edebali was really disruptive in the passing game. He flushed Newton more than once and made him throw before he was ready. "Non stop motor" is a cliche, but that guy is relentless in pursuit

Did you watch the first half?

Young guys make mistakes. And aren't typically not as quick seeing adjustments from the O and making their own. If we could every shake this injury bug and get some veteran leaders back, we will take a nice step forward.

I think Kruger is still getting used to playing DE in a 4-3 system. He played his whole career as 3-4 rush LB. I believe as he gets more comfortable in the scheme he will improve.
Maybe true, but that is exactly why I questioned the decision to open the season with Kruger starting at RDE. He is a guy we picked up off the waiver wire, he has no experience in the system and has to learn a new position. Meanwhile there is Edabli who we've spent a couple years developing, he already knows the position and is straight up better than Kruger at rushing the passer. Given the performance from the D line yesterday they have to consider keeping Edebali as the starter even when Kruger is healthy. Plus Tapp is doing a good job too. I'm just not that into Kruger.

Can't rule it out but he is being outplayed and he is still banged up a little. May be a little late in his career to effectively make that transition. Another poster mentioned that we had cam standing and rushing from the lb spot and I saw edebali do it as well so maybe when he gets back he can be effective there. Pass rushing is pass rushing. You simply have to beat the guy in front of you and he didn't look very good at that before he got injured.

I agree, keep Edebali as the starter and let Kruger be the rotational player to come in and spell him.

Good god I need a cigarette after reading that :hihi:

We're still too thin, we were getting solid pressure in the first 20 minutes of the game and it fell off towards halftime. We came out early after the half and did ok but then it fell off a lot. We need more rotation on the interior guys... we're really missing rankins.

I say this....the defense still struggled but I see a big difference this year from the last two years. This year you see guys being faster and more aggressive. I see more pressure now than in previous years. I thought the defense play ok yesterday. If it wasn't for some B/S PI calls, this game wouldn't be close. There were instances where the defense came close to getting to Cam, but just a half second late. I mean that is a big improvement. You can see how the defense have responded and kept hustling despite giving up big yards. Injuries have hurt us, but give props to the players that had step up. Great pick up with the two corners.
