NFL Ratings dipping due to shameless showboating

NFL

Anyone think this has any validity?

I don't buy it. The on field product is why the ratings have dipped. Games are too long, penalties, injuries, etc is what's wrong with the NFL. Maybe some people are turned off by the "look at me" personalities, and maybe some are turned off by the kneeling protests but I can't imagine those people being a majority. Plus, the NY Post is a crap newspaper/site/media outlet.

It's the changing nature of the business. Ratings are down for everything, tv shows, sports, and late night. Streaming has a lot to do with it.
But even with a drop in ratings, the NFL is by far the most valuable tv property.

Definitely not because of showboating..I like the dancing, just not against our Saints.

I still watch games especially our Saints..but having a rule now on Thursday night that every team plays on it is dumb. Like next week, Titans and Jaguars..WOW, let's watch that, that should be a very entertaining game. So dumb of the NFL to make it priority to have every team play on Thursday.

Let me edit that I do watch other games..I watch some of them because of fantasy. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't care to watch because there are way too many commercials.

Commercials and officiating are why ratings are dropping not because of showboating. People want to be entertained not watch robots.

When I first started reading the thread, I wondered if the article was written by an older white guy.

There's a ton of other reasons (some already stated in the thread) as to why the NFL has had a ratings dip. I think product quality is a definite contributor. Also, the way we measure ratings does not smoothly take into account streaming and other methods of viewing. I've also heard the idea floated that the NFL has peaked popularity-wise. While other countries are interested in American football, it is an American sport that for a number of reasons (mostly logistical) has difficulty gaining traction beyond a steady curiosity in other countries. The market is saturated in the states and really has no where to go but down.

agreed......it's tough to watch games these days unless your team is playing. I just refuse to sit through 3.5 hours of penalties and commercials anymore. Has nothing to do with the personalities of the players. How many people not bears and packers fans made it to halftime last night? I know I didn't.

I think they just need to look at how ratings are calculated and see if the data geography spread matches up with where teams are now located.

The Rams just moved to LA. But are there too many households in St. Louis no longer watching the NFL in protest and it's now skewing the data?

i.e. it's not accounting for the shift in viewership (if any).

Also, Twitter is now broadcasting games, and I'm not sure Nielsen ratings account for that yet.

Of all the reasons ratings are dropping (and there are plenty) this is pretty low on the list.

And I wish people would stop pointing to streaming/cord cutting as the immediate response. Other sports ratings have remained relatively stable (or even increased) through peak cord cutting and the NFL was *growing* year to year until just now, where a heavy retraction occurred. That isn't solely the result of people getting rid of cable packages or streaming games, Certainly it may play some role, but if you actually pay attention to what people are saying they're tuning out for more tangible reasons (games too long, bad officiating, bad on-field product, oversaturation, etc.) The NFL has a problem. I know true believers don't want to acknowledge it, but it does.

Games are boring unless it's your team playing.

The average game contains 20 commercial breaks, with about 100 ads. I think penalties are up around 14 per game as well - and then add challenges and replays. It's mind numbing.

I can just watch my fantasy app and see the highlights later.

The ratings for an NFL game still dwarf everything else on TV.

This and the increased scoring, lack of defense and hitting are all part of it as well. I used to love defensive battles, those were some of the best games. Now, a defensive battle has more to do with bad offensive play than good defense. The past few seasons there have been 1-2 really good defenses, a couple average defense and a bunch of bad defenses. In the 90's there were a handful of really good defenses, a handful of good defenses, a bunch of average defenses then about 5 that were just flat out bad.

I think around 2000-2010 they found a nice balance. Starting in 2011, defense has just gone away.

Roger Goodell is the reason I dislike the NFL. He mightve made a lot of money for the owners by being a ruthless, conniving businessman but the chickens are coming home to roost. The NFL doesnt feel like a fun sport anymore, it feels like a bad marriage. I stick around because I love the kids (my saints), but the love and magic is gone.

The ratings are down for multiple reasons, but I think there is some validity to his argument. I don't mind a little simple celebration when someone scores, but hate to watch a guy like Cam Newton. He acts completely arrogant and over the top, to the point that I don't want to even watch. Then, there's the other side of the spectrum -- when he loses, he acts like a little kid.

However, with all that being said, it's still not the sole reason ratings are down. There are a multitude of issues causing people to not watch. This is just one of the many.
