Max Unger, the 'other' guy in the Jimmy Graham trade, is universally respected as 'a warrior' for Saints

By Joel Erickson -- Advocate

The man the New Orleans Saints received in exchange for one of the best players in franchise history started earning the respect of his new teammates from the moment he stepped onto the practice fields in Metairie.

Max Unger is the kind of man people want to follow.

Unger, according to anybody who has played with him or coached him, might be the perfect NFL teammate. He's a gifted offensive lineman who possesses all of the intangibles that can be hard for outside observers to appreciate but matter greatly to the men who line up alongside him.

"Some people walk in and have kind of an aura, a little bit, where you feel like they have that, and some guys, it takes a long time to build up that type of trust," Saints right tackle Zach Strief said. "One practice into OTAs, we're all like, 'Oh, OK. I see it.' "

Unger sprinted from drill to drill, hustling like an undrafted free agent. New to the Saints, he grabbed control of the huddle with the authority of somebody who had been in New Orleans his entire career.

They didn't get the Jimmy Graham that they'd seen when he was with the Saints. Primarily because Drew Brees didn't go along with the deal. Wilson isn't Brees. He's a very good young QB, but in #9, the Saints have one of the best all time QBs, and Sean Payton who's a genius at creating mismatches. A perfect scenario for a TE (not a Receiver, lol) in a high scoring Offense.

The Jimmy Graham they got was the non blocking oft alligator armed Jimmy Graham that was so often overlooked while he was here.

We so stole Unger.

Graham gets way more media hype of course but Max Unger is an awesome talent that the saints absolutely stole. So glad he's part of the team.

We should trade WR's, RB's, DB's, for good Linemen all day long. If the Sea Chickens beat us, it will be because of their OL and DL, not their WR's.

I'm not sure if you've watched many Seahawks games this year, but Graham has had multiple 100yard games and has laid some of the better blocks that I've ever seen him do.

Why would I watch the seahags? I'm a Saints fan.

I'll watch the seahags when they play the Saints.

"The toughest guy I've ever been around," said left tackle Terron Armstead, no stranger to toughness in his own right. "A warrior. Somebody who's always locked in, focused, and he'd do whatever for any one of his guys. I can't say enough about Max."

Unger's teammates paid him the ultimate compliment by electing him one of two offensive team captains this season.

I dig it.

Nothing wrong with either side admitting the trade was good (and some bad) for both teams.

I think Graham was a better fit and had a higher ceiling here. A lot of that is Brees vs. Wilson but it's even more so Bevell vs. Payton. The few games I've watched of the Seahawks over the last year makes me think Bevell is a more exciting Carl Smith....if there can be such a thing. When that offense clicks, it's in spite of the play calling.

That said, Graham his the size and athleticism to feast on broken plays that Wilson is able to extend.

I am glad we traded for Unger even at the cost of Graham. The Center position for the last few years was as bad as the Guards were last year. It by far was not a sexy trade for us but it stabilizes one of the most important offensive positions with an outstanding player. Now, had the receiving corp not blossomed this year like they have, liking the trade would be harder to say.

Unger is a beast. I miss Jimmy but center was a major need.
