I remember the Saints wanting to sign him last year before settling on Browner. I wonder if they still like him. Only thing is, he is 33 years old now.

And as an added bonus, he grew up in Louisiana and played his college ball at La. Tech.

personally I want to roll with what we have and build on the depth next year. don't trade draft picks please.

Pretty much where I am. I'm not too keen on trading anyone right now. Let's sink or swim with the group we have and address key position needs in FA and the draft this summer.

I love that the young guys are getting a lot of experience, which can only help us in the coming years.

More than likely a vet CB will be added next offseason.

The question is, what level of resource are they willing to spend on that acquisition?

You don't go huge, because you already have your #1 CB, and possibly your #2. So you need a #2/#3 guy who is athletic enough to play the #1/#2 in a pinch, but also savvy enough to play the slot for the majority of the season. He also probably has to play special teams.

That sounds to me like a nice, middle aged, middle tier, mid-priced FA acquisition that doesn't get much fan fare, but consistently makes solid contributions throughout the season. The type of move that the Saints have been quite good at making.

It's the blockbuster moves (Brees notwithstanding) that they have had trouble with!

From last year:

Free agent cornerback Tramon Williams is back home thinking after his visit with the New Orleans Saints, according to a league source. But the Saints remain in play for his services.

It’s unclear if the Saints made an offer to the longtime Green Bay Packers standout or if other teams are competing to sign him.

Meanwhile, the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Saints made a “major push” to sign former New England Patriots cornerback Brandon Browner, offering more than $5 million per year.

The Saints have made the cornerback a top priority this offseason – as coach Sean Payton said they would last month. Here’s what I wrote about Williams and what I wrote about Browner when the Saints lined up visits with them on the opening day of free agency. It’s unknown if New Orleans would sign both top corners or if it’s an either-or proposition.

Saints still in play for CB Tramon Williams, but he left without deal - New Orleans Saints Blog- ESPN

I didn't realize that not only did we want him last year, but he was also an opening day of free agency visit. I also just read that he still resides in Louisiana during the off-season.

I like the player, but I wouldn't trade more than a 2018 6th round pick for a player at his age at corner.

We have several good CB's on IR that already fit the middle aged, middle tier category... We just need a couple more because injuries to CB seem to get us every year

I would just stick to what we have right now ..... hopefully Delvin will be back this coming weekend ... and Moore will be back against Denver ..... Webb is doing a decent job ...

Agreed, basically someone that is capable of offering competition for PJ Williams. Though I'd say its very possible...Sterling Moore might be that guy in all honesty.

We are playing a zone heavy scheme so the priority on CB's has to be diminished a little bit especially since you have a #1 already. Also we have premiere players at just bout every important position on the D in LDE, 3Tech, SS, and LCB so we are looking for support guys and bargain signings vs any one star player like we were back in 2014 when we went after Byrd (FS)

If we did go after a star player it would have to be at a position closer to the ball like LB or DE. So if not a RDE then maybe a LB like the kid the Pats just traded if the browns let him get to the open market.

Pro Football Focus ranks Williams 96th at his position this season

You think Byrd's deal is bad...Haden is already declining at age 27 and he has cap hits of 13.4, 14.4 and 14.4 million the next three seasons. Gross

Those are the cap hits for Cleveland based on his current deal. Saints would only incur the remaining guarantees and salary from what Haden has left on the deal. It's a 2yr commitment with the last yr probably minimum guarantees in guessing....

I'll say this. I just watched the highlights and the Baldwin play after the tackle was made Kenny V was LIVID. Hopping up and down screaming mad and I'd assume that was directed at Crawley who played unreasonably tight on a bunch formation. The need for an upgrade is there but yet I can easily see Sterling Moore/Breaux being the two outside CB's by the time Week 10 or 11 rolls around.

Crawley has 2 or 3 plays like that a game where his field/down and distance awareness absolutely kills us.

We were bailed out at half time by the botched kick but his failure to play deep to short and instead squat on a short route allowed the Corner route to be completed behind him.

there was another play where Charles Davis was screaming what are you doing rookie there is nothing in the backfield/slot for you. May have even been that same play but #2 CB is def not a strength right now.

His awareness in his zone is one of his biggest weaknesses, along with his coverage while the ball is in the air. You notice it a handful of times a game. He really struggles understanding his assignment in zone.
