NFL midseason predictions: MVP, Rookie of the Year and more - NFL.com

The only 5 players who can win the NFL MVP award | FOX Sports

NFL awards picks: Who deserves to win MVP in 2016? | SI.com

The 2016 NFL MVP race was on full display in Week 8 - SBNation.com

4 different sources and none of them mention Brees.

Tom Brady, Derek Carr, Matt Ryan, Ezekiel Elliott, Von Miller, Russell Wilson, David Johnson, Julio Jones, Matt Stafford, AJ Green... but no Drew Brees.

None of the NFL.com guys even picked him for Offensive Player of the Year.

Why? How can this be? Bountygate BS? How is that on Drew?:idunno:

Because the Saints still have a losing record.

Losing those first 3 games really hurt Drew's potential to be in these discussions, and Saints are not favorable in the medias eyes.

This, plus an early bye compared to the others makes his stats look less impressive. That will correct itself.

If we get in the hunt, I think you'll hear some chatter about it. But only among the people who know what they're talking about - Brees will always be challenged by playing in a "small" market.

But Cardinals and Bengals are 3-4-1 yet David Johnson and AJ Green are mentioned.

There is literally nothing Drew Brees can do to win an MVP. He is never casually considered for the honor, so he first has to play his way into the consciousness of the voters and then he has to be significantly better than the opposition once they've acknowledged his play.

The biggest travesty is that guys like Cam Newton and possibly Matt Ryan (this season -- buzz is high) will win the award and Brees likely never will. These two players are not worthy to carry his cleats and they are bestowed an accolade that Brees will likely never be given.

Brady misses 4 games because he "technically" cheated. Four games with zero stats.
He comes back and is almost immediately on the MVP short list.

Matt Ryan throws passes to arguably the best receiver the NFL has seen since Jerry Rice and he's on the short list. He has a couple hundred yards more than Brees and one more TD. Brees has played one fewer game at this point.

I know Brees only cares about team accomplishments. I know the MVP isn't his goal. But to imply that there is a single player more important to their team than Brees is lunacy.

Heck, the Patriots went 3-1 with essentially a scatback at QB.

It's a shame that Brees is so disrespected.

Position players aren't judged as much on wins and losses as quarterbacks are. And both Johnson and Green are putting up some video game like performances so far this year, so they are some sizzle in the discussion.

But I don't remember the last time a wide receiver actually won the MVP award, and Adrian Peterson is the only back to do so in the past decade, so I don't know how serious either's candidacy really is....

This completely nullifies the argument that Brees isn't considered because the Saints are 3-4. Either that or it shows bias.

I absolutely agree - this is a great post. I am not a conspiracy theorist, and you will never read a post from me about the media hating us, but I will say that I do believe that MVP consideration and voting is biased.

1. For so long, he was the third wheel in the Manning/Brady love+hate story.

2. Playing in the other conference, with such fewer head-to-head opportunities for a story line, didn't help.

3. His omission from that duo took on a resonance over time, so that only moneyball types had an idea of his true value.

4. We haven't had as many deep playoff runs.

5. Now, in the autumn of his years, he's at the top of his game, but it's old news. Sadly, Matt Ryan allegedly making a "leap" to something he's not, in his ninth season, is more interesting than a ho-hum 4500 yard, 38 TD season from Brees.

6. If both older QBs (Brees and Brady) are having great years, there's a good chance the Pats have a better records (b/c both guys also run the defense), so Brady always gets the nod.

The REAL short answer? Our total defense rankings since 2006, shown in years descending from this current season:

28th
31st
31st
4th
32nd
24th
4th
25th
23rd
26th
11th

Even those 4th ranked defenses were mild frauds -- we couldn't stop the Seahawks to save our lives in 2010 in the playoff game, and the 2013 defense blew home field advantage when he had two inexcusable late losses (NE and Carolina). While the 2009 defense was opportunistic, maybe our soundest all around defense was....Gibbs's first defense in 2006, when it seemed like dinosaurs ruled the globe.

You can't be an MVP without more help than he gets.

how brady is considered for it when his team was 3-1 without him is beyond me. how is brady the most VALUABLE player when they were already winning. take brees off the saints and we're likely 0-7 or 1-6. that to me means most VALUABLE.

It used to bother me, but it won't change and so I don't waste energy on it anymore. He's cranked out three 5,000+ yard seasons and hasn't won it. Now he still projects to 5,000 and garners no attention. Still has a high completion percentage and TD to INT ratio. He's sort of a victim of his own insane production. It's not right, but he's not the flashy new thing that the media lights on. We'll have to make a playoff push for him to get some consideration, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that either.

And, sadly, he gets accused of chasing and padding stats even by some fans on here.
