Does anybody know the record of the Saints after Coach Payton summons the emotional powers of a "Bat Game"?

Is there an emotional letdown afterwards? Does the team come out flat on the road the next week? Or does that type of win get the ball rolling and the wins start coming in?

(Would any of my more sober SR members be able to research this drunken question?)

Solid question...maybe someone else had the answe.

In 2010 we had a "bat game" against the Steelers on Halloween. The next week we went on the road to visit the lowly John Fox Panthers and we blew them out 34-3.

I think we beat the Vikings in the NFC Championship after the inaugural "bat game".

After a search I found all these online...

Counting the 2010 Steelers one, the one this past Sunday and all these that'll bring the record in bat games to 7-2 at least.

As for the question at hand...

  • following the 2009 Jets game: defeated Giants, 48-27
  • following NFC Divisional vs. Cardinals: defeated Vikings, 31-28
  • following NFC Championship vs. Vikings: defeated Colts, 31-17
  • following Super Bowl XLIV vs. Colts: defeated Vikings, 14-9
  • following 2010 Steelers game: defeated Panthers, 34-3
  • following 2010 Cowboys game: defeated Bengals, 34-30
  • following NFC Wildcard vs. Seahawks: defeated by Packers, 34-42
  • following 2012 Broncos game: defeated Eagles, 28-13
  • following 2016 Seahawks game: ? vs. 49ers
So that'd be 7-1 following these "known" bat games.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a bat game? Does SP just give them out to players if they win or?

I never knew that the Jets game in 2009 was the first 'bat game' - I'd always assumed it was the Cardinals game in the playoffs that year when Reggie carried his bat out onto the field during the introductions.

Also interesting that until last week we hadn't had a bat game for 4 years. I guess with so many new players on the team since the last one in 2012, Coach can recycle this as a motivational tool.

Perhaps the whole Bountygate thing took the stiffness out of Payton's wood.

It's kind of hard to imply on-field aggravated battery after all that.

It may have started in 2008 when Jo-Lonn Dunbar got a "Big Hit Bat" for his game against Tampa Bay. (SEP 7)

The most famous though was before the Playoff Game against the Cardinals in 2009, SP got a bat for all the players with the inscription "Bring the Wood". Reggie Bush was so inspired he brought his "Bring the Wood" Bat onto the Dome at pre-game. Reggie took the message to heart and played a hard hitting pound the rock down your face type game. Reggie had 108 hard fought yards on 5 carries and 4 catches. His best play was a 46-yard rip for a TD. He also had 109 return yards with a big 83 yard punt return for a TD to close out the game. Interestingly enough, the only player with more yards from scrimmage in that game was Tim Hightower then with the Cardinals. Hightower opened up the game against us with a 70 yard TD.
