So while I was watching Game 7 of the world luck swing championships last night I got to thinking:

When we get to the point where humans can "upload" their consciousness into a computer, will people bury their physical bodies? That's the type of consideration I'm sure most of you have never had.

How bizarre would that be to visit your own grave.

This is an interesting question...but what would be the point of uploading consciousness if one could not download it into another physical body? The mind is certainly the culmination of the human experience, but it would seem to be nothing without the physical senses--touch, sight, hearing, etc.

Maybe our physical bodies from birth will "die", but our consciousness won't. In that regard, we would have to define what makes "you", you. Is it your consciousness and body only? Maybe we would never visit our graves. Just think back to how many physical bodies we've shed

...but the body does all the fun stuff

yes. Plus, so much of our humor is about body functions and noises. What will be funny?

wait in the future, without a body there will be no laughing

Why not just copy it into the computer. Two yous.

What happens when we realize there is only one consciousness and the only thing there would be to upload would be our own egos or "dreams" of differentiation. Would those even be worthy of uploading? Or would we realize that the only thing worth keeping was already shared by everyone anyway?

Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.

Now here's Tom with the weather.

Bill made it funny. He believed it too though, as do I.

The purpose and goal of Buddhism is to see through the veils of illusion (makya) which make up human existence and and realize that we are all indeed one with the Universe. I'm too ADD to be a good meditator, so I understand and believe this Oneness but I feel like an observer as opposed to a participant.

In college when I tripped on acid or got stoned this basic truth became reality, and life's woes (that there were any, really) faded to a laughable obscurity. It was like the world as I experienced it turned inside out. What I don't get is why it's so hard to get back to that bliss without acid or weed?

it's more that we will have instantaneous access to all humor, thus flattening it

That's like highlighting an entire page of text. If everything is funny, you have access to all humor, what's humorous?

What will that moment be like... When your consciousness passes from your physical body to a different medium. Do you "die"? And if so... How do we know that the "you" that goes into the computer isn't just some sort of copy and paste, and the "you" that you really are actually just dies.

Whoa.
