Coach Payton On "Staying Focussed."

I didn't see this article posted yet. If it has been, I apologize.

Here's an excerpt, followed by the link with the complete story:

....Payton however was quick to point out however that his team can not get caught up in post-season chatter just yet, “There’s still a lot of football left here and I know it’s five weeks but again we’re sitting here at seven wins right now, we’re not sitting at ten wins or eleven wins,” said Payton. “We’re sitting at seven and I think that’s the approach I think you to take. From a momentum standpoint we hadn’t lost two games in a row until that stretch last week and it was a way for us to bounce back and I think that was important.”

Payton said he believes his team won’t have a problem in not focusing on the remaining five games of the season, if anything he’ll let them know this week that there is plenty of room for improvement...

Focus on San Francisco is precisely what the team needs right now, not on Dallas! Geaux Payton!

I also loved hearing him say on ESPN that he had never seen a 7 win team make the playoffs.

Simple stuff, but an excellent point and something for the players to think about.

We ARE in position to make the playoffs, but we haven't won anything YET.

It's becoming very clear that Sean was not only "the right person" for the Saints job... He was also ready and prepared to become a head coach in the NFL...

Much easier said than done.

Thanks for posting. That was a good read. Coach says simple things that are right on target. How he was passed up as HC material is a mystery to me.

I remember reading that he had actually turned the Raiders down a year or two ago.

He did turn the Raiders down saying it was not the right job at the right time for him. What blows me away is that Loomis admitted he did not know of Payton until John Fox called him. Kinda tells me why the saints sucked so bad the last 4 years ... the GM doesn't know the league.

There were many other organizations who've also made coaching changes over the past 3 years who didn't go calling on Sean. Don't knit pick Loomis. Be grateful that he had the foresight to look at Sean when Sean was recommended to him...

FYI - Jim Finks looked at Mora Sr. only after Dick Vermeil declined the Saints offer. Vermeil and Mora were friends, and Vermeil recommended him to Finks.

The Saints sucked so bad the past 4 years because Haz pushed hard to keep Loomis at a distance.

why would john fox tell loomis about payton??

Football is not what many fans think it is.

It isn't a war in which every other team is the enemy and to be hated at all costs.

Football culture is something completely different. There is a LOT of emphasis on character and integrity. Religion/spirituality is a big part of football.

These guys are all close friends and genuinely want to see each other succeed.

And they don't want an easy road to victory. They want to know they beat the best to reach the top.

So John Fox recommends Sean Payton because they are friends and because he feels Payton would be a great coach.

A worthy adversary.

What is a shame is football culture is hidden from the world mainly because the fans don't want to know about it.

Sports media puts low intellect spokesmen out front and speaks to the least common denominator.

I think they are afraid to expose the touchy-feely side of a very violent sport.
