This actually worked! What doctors don't want you to know?

Mr Taylor confessed at the beginning of the year he had an addiction to food.
He would spend his days drinking soft drink and eating deep-fried food, ice cream, cake, chocolate and a lot of pizza.
“I had a realisation I was a food addict and it got me thinking about how if you’re an alcoholic you quit alcohol, or a drug addict you quit drugs,” he said.
“You can’t quit food, but I wanted to get as close as possible and wondered if there was one particular food I could eat and potatoes came up best.
“You literally get everything you need from potatoes. Everybody knows they’ve got lots of carbs but they have enough protein and fat and potatoes are really good for fibre, vitamin C and iron.”
Mr Taylor, who has posted his year-long journey on social media, said the first two weeks of his potato diet were torture, but after the fortnight his food cravings stopped.
He eats about three to four kilograms of potatoes each day, and does not allow himself to become hungry and turn to other foods.
He’s also managed to keep his social life, and takes his own potatoes to friends’ dinner parties.
He will also call up restaurants he’s going to in advance to make sure they can cook up some potatoes for him.
He even managed to stick to his potato diet during a trip to Los Angeles.
“Across the road from the hotel I stayed in was a restaurant that baked potatoes so every morning I went across the road and picked up heaps of them,” he said.
“I only realised it was there after a day or two so before that I was going to the supermarket and asked my hotel to put a microwave in my room,” he said.
Mr Taylor eats potatoes in every way, from boiled to mashed to baked. He even created potato pancakes.

My health just continues to improve. I had high cholesterol but now it’s low, my blood pressure has dropped and my sugar level has dropped,” he said.
“Every time I get a new blood test, it just gets better.”

Amazing!

“My outlook on life was really bleak before I started so it was just really important to get through this challenge and change my outlook on life. I was going down a steep slope before the year started and this was about a lot more than losing weight for me. It was about me not being at all happy with the direction I was going in and where my life was headed. I’m really glad I stuck to my guns and did it. I’ve never stuck to anything in my life,” he said.
“I’m a much happier, more positive person. I have a lot more energy and am more creative.”
Dietitians have previously criticised Mr Taylor’s potato diet, saying he would miss out on a range of vitamins and minerals.
But Mr Taylor slams any disparagement about his year on potatoes.
“One thing that always comes up is people think what I’ve done is really extreme. I’d like to point out weighing 151.7kg is pretty extreme. Being overweight, sick and depressed, that’s an extreme situation to be in and I think desperate times call for desperate measures,” he said.
“If you want extreme results, you have to do extreme things. Yes it’s extreme but what’s wrong with that?”

So... my Naturopathic Doctor, as part of my prescribed diet (in order to try to regulate my out of control blood sugar at the time, and improve my other numbers) required that I cut out all forms of rice and potatoes, and reduce carb intake to 30 grams or less per meal. Not easy for a Cajun, right?

Other requirements like eating more leafy vegetables, juicing, eliminating anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup, eating organic, taking supplements, probiotics, etc. have factored into my diet. Lots of other factors, but I am cutting it short.

All of the benefits that Mr. Taylor claims to have gained resulting from his potato diet have also resulted from my own diet which eliminated said potatoes. His results read like my own since I started the diet four and a half months ago. Go figure!

So I wonder ... could I just turn it all around and eat nothing but French fries? I sure do miss them. Then when I get tired of them I can just go back to my current diet, right? :ezbill:

I wonder if going on a strict Buds' Broiler Cheeseburger only diet would work? :hihi:

I am definitely hankering.

I am also "low carbing" to control my blood sugar. Which has worked really well and I have lost 40-50 pounds without exercising. I'm not really keeping track of the weight, though, because I'm doing it to keep me from becoming diabetic.

I do miss potatoes, though.

I'm afraid to add them back, since the diet has worked so well. Bacon is my consolation I guess.

So, he stopped doing the really crappy stuff, and stuck to one food he liked that wasn't that bad.

Yeah, that usually works. It's not a balanced approach, but compared to what he was eating, it's better.

And nutritionally it's not a great long term strategy but it's certainly better than the food adjacent things he was putting in his body

You'd have to get diet coke to even out the cheeseburgers, but yeah... I think that's how biology works.

Be sure to get hickory smoke sauce, onions and cheese on both the burger and fries.

Oh, and some prilosec too.

:9:

and thus the 2017 fad diet was born, the spud diet.

seriously I have long been amazed at how far behind nutrition science has always been behind all other sciences.

Taters, mmmm-hmmmmm

You know I was falling a sleep last night listening to the midnight express radio show(99.5FM) I forgot the hosts name but he was discussing how potatoes is a doomsday food. Many people have it stocked in there kitchen but be careful over time they can spoil.

I don't think we really know enough about how metabolism works to create a magic diet.

It seems to me that consistency is the most important thing in a diet.

Maybe our bodies learn to metabolize what we eat most efficiently, and it's actually just giving it less variety to "figure out" that is the key to being healthy.

People try these fad diets and they try eating potatoes or juicing and while they get fast results, it never stays because they haven't changed their eating ways. People in want fast, fast and diets aren't meant to eat that way. Just created caloric deficit and you lose the weight and keep it off instead of yo-yo'ing....

Potatoes are part of a plant group called "nightshades". Overconsumption causes inflammation in the body and can cause many health issues over time. However, the other crap he was eating is toxic to the body as well. I think moderation is the perfect diet. Too much of anything is not good. I also find that restricting one food from your diet always backfires (unless you're allergic of course). You will most likely end up binging on it. This is why I can't stand fad diets. If you have to buy something, such as a book or certain type of food to be on the diet, it's probably a sham.
