I hope he makes full recovery and becomes the beast in the NFL like he had been for us this year.

godspeed young man!

Hate to make good news out of bad, but he will be a great pickup for the Saints in the 5th/6th round.

Hate it for Beckwith, he is a legitimate talent. But I have to admit, as a Saints fan, his draft stock dropping makes him even more enticing of a pick because he will likely have an insanely high return on investment.

Can someone sell me on him a bit? I admittedly haven't seen enough on him to have a decent reading, and the scouting reports that I've read make him sound like a bigger version of Curtis Lofton.

He appears to be longer than Lofton which helps him in coverage, whereas Lofton was mainly a thumper who was just ok in coverage. He's definitely smart, rarely shoots the wrong gap, makes solid tackles, is a leader without being all loud and full of bluster. I've seen every game he's played for LSU and was glad he came back for his senior year. Sucks that he got hurt at the end of the year like this because he was projected in the second or third last year, I believe. (I could be totally wrong about this...)

He only runs in the 4.8 range and seems to wait for things to come to him rather than diagnosing things before hand, but it's served him well in college. That's something he'll have to improve on at the next level, but he's got the size to rival small defensive ends, so it's a bit of a wash to me.

He will be fantastic in the right defense, like most LBers.

He reads his keys very well, gets off blocks niceley, his game speed is extremely fast, likely due to quickly diagnosing plays. There were a lot of snaps that it felt like he was in the other teams huddle. You could see a clear difference in LSU's defense with and without him. And to me, when you're on a defense with that much talent and the unit clearly is not the same without you, it says a lot about his ability.

In my opinion the best comparison to him is Scott Shanle before the physical decline. An incredibly smart football player, limited but enough athleticism to keep up. If he can be snagged in the 3rd round, its a no brainer. The kind of guy you draft who ends up starting for your team for a decade.
