"I got a few more (years) at least," Brees said on Good Morning Football Thursday when asked how much longer he was planning to play in the NFL.

"When you first get into the league you think you're invincible, right? You think you're going to last forever. But I understand now, I'm just finishing my 16th season and I'm probably a little closer to the end than I am the beginning. So I just want to create a tremendous sense of urgency for every single year. I don't want to look any further past this year and what's right in front of us. Especially with what we've gone through over the last three years while watching other teams from the NFC South go to the Super Bowl.

Carolina two years ago and Atlanta this year, that's good for those guys and their teams because they've earned it. But I'd like to see us back there and that's what I'm focused on."

Advancements in quick-strike passing offenses and health science have allowed players -- especially quarterbacks who take fewer hits -- to play much longer than they would have in previous eras

New Orleans has not made the playoffs since 2013 and it's difficult to see Brees not correcting that before he hangs it up -- whenever that might be.

a discount going forward would help with that. i mean, if he really means it when he says he wants to get back there with us, knocking a little off future salary would go a long way.

He knocked his cap number from 30 mill to 17.25 mill.....what else do you want him to do?
What future salary? He only has one year left on his contract and we are only on the hook for the amount of this year.

No doubt.
And he's not going to sign for cheap either.

Any team with a very good quarterback has the same issue.
And if they don't have one, they'd give anything to get one.

That why hitting in the draft is so important. You can replenish so much cheaper than having to find that one difference maker every year in free agency and having to pay them out of the ying yang.
I would do what ever it took to make sure I have the best scouting department in the league. Every year.

1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 years could could all be a "few". More than 4-5 would be called "Several".:hihi:

Regardless of how many years he thinks he has left, ultimately, it is for mother nature to decide.

History proves that the team needs to plan for Brees' play to fall off sharply any year now, likely within the next 2-3 seasons. Hopefully Drew is one of a small handful of anomalies, but very few HOF QBs make it past the age of 38/39 and still play at an elite level.

Personally, I feel like his replacement, likely a first or second round pick, should be on the roster as a backup either this upcoming season or the following season.

no. we're on the hook for 18 million after the 2017 season, regardless of whether he resigns or not. a team friendly deal beyond (ideally one that doesn't require the FO to kick the can down the road further) 2017 would help with getting more pieces, which in turn potentially would help him, if his goal is to win another championship in a saints uniform. what do i want from him? nothing. just addressing something that would help him achieve this goal if he really wants to win another championship here. he's welcome to command as much money as he wants going forward. but this could adversely affect his stated goal.

He signed a team friendly deal. It was a 2 year contract that allowed the team to take the existing 30 mill cap hit and extend it out another 5 years.

The longstanding myth that Drew's contract is the reason we aren't competitive is and has always been a joke.

But by all means tell the NFL's passing yards leader for the last 3 years that he needs to not only take a cut on his existing contract but also sign another "team friendly" deal.

he doesn't make the contracts and he don't decide how to divide up the contract numbers. Why don't anyone tell Brady to sign a cheap deal? Drew is a HOF qb and he has earned his money. I wish people would understand that. It isn't his fault that the front office signed some horrendous contracts and incurred dead money that destroyed the cap money available. Listen, if they didn't hand out stupidly high contracts that didn't work out, this wouldn't be a problem at all.

are you a broken record in real life, or do you just play one on the internet? drew said he wants to get another championship here. giving us a discount going forward would potentially help with that. did i say i think he should take less money, or that his contract has kept us from being competitive? no. just stating something i thought was obvious, but you seem to have a hard time grasping it, or just feel compelled to defend against something i never said. either way, i don't care.
