Interesting thought. After success the head coach gets a lot of credit. Now it's clear to me the key to there success from a schematic stand point is Shannahan. Look at Quinn's impact, still implementing a version of the cover 3 defense. To there credit the defense rose to be above average when it needed to. But it is still a defense you can score on. For that particular team, Shannahan is a better asset then Quinn. Wonder why you hardly see administration make the move and keep the better asset. If y'all were decision makers for the buzzards who would you keep?

Shanahan has more talent to work with on his side of the ball.

I hate giving the Falcons credit for anything. I do like the way Quinn has his Cb's playing the ball. They don't try to win a foot race
with the outside receiver. They keep their heads turned and play the ball in flight. This makes them less vulnerable to back shoulder
throws. It's the same way his corners played in Seattle when he was DC. It works, and he brought that with him to Atlanta.

There ranked toward the bottom allowing about 24 points a game. Now I'm not saying he isn't impactful at all just not as impactful as Shannahan. Offense drivin team with a lot of there cap space going to be going on that side of the ball. Makes more sense to keep the asset that helps make u dynamic. At least in my opinion.

Much of that is the early part of the season, into mid season. Quinn needed time to instill his way of playing which you can clearly see with the LB play, how quickly the DLIne penetrates, and especially the db play. It takes more than a year...but you saw that defense get more stout at the end of the season. We couldn't purchase a TD against them...until Quinn rested some assets. Then, the next week what they did to GB was..........it makes me mad that we don't have that ability.

He can plug and play good offensive coordinators like batteries, but teaming it up with a defense like his...now that's what gets you into the dance. See New England, Seattle etc.

With a Defense like that...Pete Carmichael could go there next season and that team won't miss a beat.

The key factor in both Shanahan's and Quinns's success is Matt Ryan. Both coaches fell into a good situation.

I miss Mike Smith. He always seemed to have his team ready - to choke. Maybe they can bring him in to speak to the team before the SB.

We shall soon see what impact Shanahan had on this team once he bolts for the head coaching gig in SF.
You have to believe that it's going to effect the chemistry of their team. ATL better hope they win it all Sunday . I fully expect them to come crashing back down to earth next season.

Maybe he can give them a speech about digging deeper than they ever have before.

This is a good point. Falcons defense has played well latley, but that's mostly due to the fact that they are playing with 21 point halftime leads for the last 3 or 4 games. Teams have to take chances to get back into games and their defense is good at making them pay for those chances. But make no mistake, ATL is in the SB because their offense is incredible this year.

Reminds me of the LSU situation in a way. When they were looking for the new HC all I was worried about was how they keep Aranda on staff running the defense because that dude is incredible. As long as the HC doesn't get in his way they should still be good.

You look at the role of a head coach In the pro game. Now different guys bring different shematic ideals. Some or just the mediator. The guy that approves practice schedules. Call the time outs make the call to challenge or go for first down. Last say on personel. But the game planning usually goes to coordinaters unless you have a expertise in a system aka Payton. My thoughts are do you keep the guy that is implementing a average cover 3. Or A up and coming play caller like Shannahan. Kyle really has elevated and grown his schematics. Used to run his dad play book. Zone read runs a lot of playaction bootlegs. Now he is copying what has been working in the NFL. He copied us a lot.
Implements of Mcdaniels system in New England. A lot of match up football.

You are stuck, and not understanding. McDaniel, Shanahan, hell, Carmichael all can have offensive success, but if they don't have a Bill Belichick or Pete Carroll or Dan Quinn defense, the will be home in the post season.

I hate to give the Falcons credit as well, but their offense reminds me of how ours use to be.

Not stuck at all. I see it differently.Dont think u understand my point. Belicheck best game planning coach in football. Obvious his impact. Carroll don't bring a lot X's and O's but can relate well with his players in a unique way. John Harbaugh for example. Special teams expert. Dan Quinn a cover 3 def coordinater. League has caught up with the cover 3 in my opinion. Main point is there is a chemistry with the personel on the offense. QB/ audibles match ups/ play calling its all clicking. All there $$ cap gonna be on that side of the ball. Middle of the road defense gonna be all you can hope and those kinda coordinaters are usually available. A evolving play caller like Shannahan that has the right bead on his personel are not. I would Let Quinn go and make Shannahan the HC to keep the dynamic going.

Interesting question. My answer is Quinn. First, we know that Quinn has the skill-set to be and can be a successful head coach. Cannot say the same for Shannahan. Second, loss of Quinn would cause much greater instability and dislocation in the organization. Third, Quinn has helped develop the type of team Atlanta wants to build and be.

Not to mention, from everything I've seen Quinn really seems to be a master motivator. I think you need Quinn at the top. Shanny doesn't have that kind of personality and doesn't appear to be the motivator Quinn is. Not to mention they have their system in place even with Shanahan leaving. Quinn isn't stupid. He's not going to change that now.
