Reggie Wayne on Saints WR coach Curtis Johnson: 'He taught me everything I know' (1 Viewer)

After each of his seasons in the NFL, Reggie Wayne would watch film of many of the top wide receivers around the league.

Among the players the Marrero native would view were New Orleans Saints receivers Marques Colston and Devery Henderson, and not because of Wayne's ties to the area.

Wayne's wide receivers coach in college was Curtis Johnson. After spending 10 seasons at Miami, 1996-2005, Johnson joined the New Orleans Saints from 2006-11 where he worked with Colston, Henderson and others.

"It basically was almost like a clone of myself, looking at myself in the mirror," Wayne said of watching those Saints wide receivers.

Johnson jumped from the Saints to Tulane, serving as head coach from 2012-15. He spent 2016 with the Chicago Bears, but he's back with the Saints for 2017, replacing John Morton who left to become offensive coordinator for the New York Jets...

There is no better WR coach in the NFL, in my opinion. Johnny Morton was a good WR's coach, no question! However, Curtis Johnson is the master!

Man I can't wait to see what he does with our WRs. IMO we're going to see improvements from all of our guys. I would bet Coleman is going to take some big steps forward.

I don't anticipate us keeing Johnson for too long. But with these still VERY young WR group, things could become legend very soon.

Plus, I have a strong feeling we might still add another reciever.

And the homer in me is coming out here, I'd love to see what Johnson could do with Malachi Dupre. He might fall all the way to the 4th or 6th round if his combine isn't too good.

Snead got to be the toughest wide receiver we ever had. He don't care who you are, he will get into defender face. Never been the type who will hurt the team by doing dumb stuff but you will never see him back down. People often compare him to Lance Moore but if you really want to compare, Snead is actually ahead of the curve. It took 3 years before Lance got significant playing time. With Snead he became a force halfway through the 2015 season and pick it off in 2016 and had another good year.

Now that the "master" is back coaching the receivers, could our "already" very good receivers group be that much better? We will wait and see but if they can add another elements to their game, this year could be very interesting. To be honest, our receiving group in 2007 through 2011 wasn't all that talented. Henderson and Meachem were good contributor but really didn't take over games as much. Now we have 3 that can take over games. Add Brandon Coleman to the mix too. Let just hope Curtis can make him better. Then we are all set.

Curtis Johnson is a New Orleans native that went to St. Charles Catholic in LaPlace.

He coached Wide Receivers at San Diego State while Sean Payton was offensive assistant and Running Backs coach in 1989-1993. While there they helped develope Darnay Scott into a very good WR and Marshall Faulk into one of the greatest dual threat RB's of all time.

While with the Miami Hurricanes from 1996-2005 Curtis coached Andre Johnson, Santana Moss, and Reggie Wayne as well as RB's Edgerrin James, Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee, Frank Gore and TE's Bubba Franks, Jeremy Shockey, Kellen Winslow.
He was also credited with recruiting standout safety Ed Reed, another native New Orleanian.

Last year with the train wreck Bears that had 3 QB's start at least 5 games Johnson helped 2nd year UDFA Cameron Meredith to a near 900 yard, 4 TD season. And I honestly don't think it's a coincidence Jordan Howard had such an amazing year. Curtis Johnson has been around some incredible RB's his entire career. And what do you know, Zach Miller had a career year despite playing in only 10 games. I'm sure that's a coincidence too. Just like Jimmy Graham, Jeremy Shockey, David Thomas and Billy Miller being such standouts for us while he was here.

He was here while Deuce McAllister, Pierre Thomas, Reggie Bush, Mike Bell, Darren Sproles, Mark Ingram and Chris Ivory had great seasons. I believe his impact will be felt all over the offense. He turned Meachem, Henderson, Moore and Colston into devastating blockers on screens and running plays.

He will help Ingram, Hightower, Cadet, Murphy, Lascoe or whoever we have back there either directly or indirectly.

I can't wait to see what he does with Cooks, Thomas, Snead, Coleman and don't forget... Tommylee Lewis.

Definitely. But I feel like he will help our entire offense become a much more efficient machine that gets back to 40-burgers... and I don't even like that term.

I think he will work with Fleener, Josh Hill and Hooman as well as all the RB's. I don't see Sean Payton limiting him to only working with the WR's. The man is too good and been around too long.
