Some team is going to celebrate a big-ticket signing in the coming weeks.

The player will be billed as the guy who is going to change everything for that organization.

It might work out. It also might not. That’s the danger of dabbling in free agency. You might find the missing link, or you might just find a pile of fool’s gold.

Given the expectations that came with signing safety Jairus Byrd, who will reportedly be released next week according to NFL Network, the only way to sum up his time in New Orleans is as underwhelming.

He was supposed to put a rising defense over the top and help deliver this city its second Super Bowl. Instead, his tenure will be remembered most for what didn't happen.

Nick makes it sound like making Byrd a June 1 cut still helps us in free agency this year.

Before this move, New Orleans was projected to have something around $30 million in cap space this offseason. Cutting Byrd straight up would save $3.2 million against the cap. If he is designated as a post-June 1 cut, the Saints can spread his dead money over two seasons, which would save them $7.8 million this season.

I hope the Saints stop putting their hopes in expensive free agents. Teams, management, and players are so secretive about injuries that it's almost impossible to know for sure if a FA is healthy.

Teams seldom allow really good, healthy, and mentally grounded FA's to walk. Just about every one has baggage, and more often than not, it's hidden baggage.

Build through the draft please.

I would like a Morris Claiborne + Micah Hyde combo. Great potential without a whole lot of risk.

I like the way you are thinking. Micah Hyde impressed me with his versatility last season. What is the speculation for his asking price? And for some reason I am ok withh taking the risk reward with Morris as well.

I really don't know what Hyde's market value is. I've asked the same thing in another thread. My guess would be around $5M a year, but that's just a wild guess.

It helps because money is fungible.

That 7.8m from Byrd will simply cover signing the draft class, which often doesn't happen until after June 1st anyway.

So we do have more money to spend in the coming FA period now because we know we'll have the money for the draft class later.

I like Hyde as depth/competition and he won't cost too much.

As for Claiborne, I could take him or leave him. He finally turned in a good season last season in a year that everything lined up for the Cowboys and multiple formerly bad players looked decent. Before that, he'd given up a 100+ passer rating each of his first 4 seasons and was basically a bust.

I have a feeling someone is going to pay him based off just 2016 and noway do I want to invest decent money in that guy.

I think Claiborne's due for a Fairley type, 1 year "prove it" deal.

Believe it or not Claiborne's good season was accredited to a simple switch early in the year. I remember reading about it..so i went and found the quote.

Dallas Cowboys: Why did Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne switch CB spots? | SportsDay

Through three weeks of OTAs, Carr has been lining up at right cornerback and Claiborne has been at left corner. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli said the switch is not permanent, but it's an interesting move considering Carr has played on the left side the last four seasons.

Apparently swapping CB's sides can be just as detrimental as swapping an Olinemans sides(hello Peat)

If Jamal Adams somehow falls to 11, we need to run like hell to get pick in.

Found this quote on Micah Hyde. If he comes that cheap, we would be crazy not to at least attempt to sign him.

Because he’s unable to play significant snaps on the perimeter, Hyde’s next contract doesn’t figure to match former Packers cornerback Casey Hayward’s market. Hayward signed a three-year, $15.3 million contract that included $6.8 million guaranteed last offseason with the San Diego Chargers. Hyde might be looking more at the $3 million range.

I like Hyde but when SP said they maybe wouldn't go after a S in FA because of how deep the class was I kind of glossed over him but I'd be more than thrilled with him. Thought he'd be a good backup to Kenny and a core ST's guy.

Everyone here keeps wanting to draft an adore Jackson or other guy to take over return duties and i just cannot see Sean putting return duties in a rookies hands again after the last 2 years. Eventually he turned to less explosive veterans to fill the position last year (Hightower/Cadet/Byrd) because the young guys were making too many costly mistakes.

Id def prefer a vet back there returning kicks/fielding punts.

His skill set and versatility would make him a great back up for KV. It is precisely the reason I would love to have him. The fact he is a ST guy is just icing on the cake and something not to overlook value wise. If Saint Ace is right and he is looking for something in the range of 3 million a year that is a crazy good deal in my opinion and we would be nuts not to get him.
