INDIANAPOLIS - The New Orleans Saints officially have a good amount of money available for the league's new calendar year, which begins March 9.

The NFL set the 2017 salary cap at $167 million, the NFLPA announced Wednesday. With the Saints carrying over $5.75 million in unused cap space from 2016, the figure set for the Saints is $172.75, according to the NFLPA.*

The Saints will have $30.86 million in available cap space, according to sportrac.com

Ahh, now I understand where OTC was getting it's cap numbers from (they were showing our upper cap at 173m the past few months when the estimates were always 168m). They are counting carry over while some other sites weren't.

OTC has us at 27.3m in space with the new cap set. That doesn't include Byrd though. Sportrac isn't counting Byrd yet either.

So we'll have 8m more on top of whatever these sites are projecting.

Might as well say 35m including Byrd as a June 1 cut.

Where are they getting the 5.75 carry over figure from? Just last week the NFLPA reported the Saints carry over is just $1.4 million.

If we have $35m, would $5m cover the draft and UDFA? Leaving us around $30m for free agency?

35m for Loomis to Loomis?!?!?!

Might as well be 200m, lol!

Seriously though, that's a good number to make 1 really nice siging (looking like CB at this point) and then fill in really well with nice, solid guys at LB, RG, & early down WDE. We may very well come out of this off season as a VERY complete team top to bottom, with the only real "issue" being our early down pass rush.

With Drew Brees at the helm, I can live with that.

You won't get Byrd's savings until after free agents are off the market, might as well count his savings for signing draft picks.

the other will be what we actually have to spend during the free agency hoopla.

That's right. So a cool $27m for free agency. I like it.

I'm happy about having that much to use, especially seeing what we've done with less than 10 mill for the last few seasons. I just wish some of the pass rushers were still on the market.

We could get a good CB during free agency and draft one too. We will have to find a starting FS to compete with Bell. We need a high caliber LB and HAVE to have a pass rusher opposite cam.

Now, don't be surprised when the FO signs a QB right out of the gate :covri:.

G Larry Warford $9m
LB Zach Brown $7m
CB Morris Claiborne $6m
S Micah Hyde $5m

Total $27m

If the Saints give Claiborne $6m/yr, Loomis and Payton need to be fired before the ink dries.

1 year deal is what I'm thinking. Just like we did with Fairley, except without his salary spread out over multiple years. If he works out, we re-sign him. If not, that's $6m in our pocket for next offseason.

With Claiborne, he's almost certainly going to simply go back to the Cowboys.

They finally got some semblance of a return from what looked like a total bust the first 4 years. Now he's their starting LCB.

I feel the LSU love here, but I'm leaning more Logan Ryan (even though he's gonna get paid something crazy.)

I wouldn't be mad at that free agent class. Loomis could work the contracts to push money into next year where we have even more cap savings.
