Justice League trailer [Oh yeah, *spoilers*] (1 Viewer)

I get it. I probably wouldn't have noticed it if not for watching a female reviewer take issue with the following points:

- All the butt shots from below when she's wearing tight leather pants
- butt shots when she's slo mo fighting guys in the museum
- when Aquaman sits on the lasso of Hestia (truth) and praises everyone on the team but focuses on his physical attraction to WW...

it all seems like a step backward from where we were with Wonder Woman earlier in the year.

Did the same female reviewer have an issue with naked Steve Trevor in the hot springs during Wonder Woman? The shirtless Jason Mamoa walking slow-mo? Shirtless Henry Cavel in all of his movies? If she isn't getting upset at the objectification of these males characters, then I find her disingenuous. If she does have issues with those scenes, then props to her, but I still really don't see the issue other than the fact that all 3 of them make me feel bad about the way I look--but that is my problem.

I didn't say anything because the idea of a black suit is dumb. He was buried as Clark Kent. Why would he be wearing a black Superman suit? It makes more sense that he's wearing an actual suit and of course such a garment isn't going to hold up to Superman blowing through the roof of a ship, hence Superman is shirtless the way that Flash fell on WW because they're fighting in close quarters, the serious moment needs some levity and gravity exists in this fantasy world on the movie screen.

Now you may ask "Why didn't his pants come off as well?". Obviously showing his penis would prevent the PG rating that the studio is going for. This is where the line that is drawn between "realism" and "remember we're making a money to make money here" and conversation has taken a turn from the actual movie and something that's just dumb. It's turned into people tripping over the other to show how sensitive they are to the plight of women being objectified and assaulted or being hypersensitive.

The point wasn't you didn't say anything because you thought it was stupid or not. The point was that you didn't say the poster was being hypersensitive for pointing out what he perceived as an opportunity to show off Cavill's pecks. You offered up a poor rationalization for WW/Flash scene, but totally ignored this previous post although your justification for it was much better.

Gal Gadot being sexy as hell IS the reason she's playing Wonder Woman. Scarlett Jo being sexy is the reason she's Black Widow. The same could be said for all the actors in these Super Hero movies. But I don't remember Black Widow being used as a sex object punchline in the middle of a fight scene. It would have been just as unnecessary as it was to do in JL during this scene. It's very possible to be sexy without being a prop. That's why Wonder Woman scored so well with women. In the examples you mentioned, Hemsworth and Mamoa and Cavill get shirtless, but they are still central to their respective scene. The scene with Flash turns WW into an object.

As movie goers we're so used to women be objects that we don't recognize the difference. Ghostbusters (the new one) did a great job of turning the tables. And you know what happened? Men HATED it. Right here on SR no less. No one said hypersensitive then. The length you're going to defend an unnecessary scene makes me think you might be the hypersensitive one.

Eh...agree to disagree I guess. Over all, I thought it was a great movie.

Well, it is a lasso of truth after all. WW could save me from a band of ruthless terrorists shooting an automatic weapon at me and, even being terrified, her hotness would never be out of the forefront of my mind.

Who knows, maybe one happy day we may get to a point where all men act appropriately with women --- but count me as one who believes that even then the mental "objectification" of women will never end so long as men continue to be straight and full of testosterone.

Look I'm not trying to be overly critical of being a male, hell I've even made a couple of contributions to a couple threads in BTL.... lol.

However subtle it was, there was a difference in tone from WW to JL.

Maybe stick with agree to disagree rather than the hypersensitivity accusation??? I do think it is a matter of perspective.

I did not see the scene as objectification as I was watching it. For that scene and many others, it was clear (in my mind at least) that WW was the only real adult in the group (and importantly was NOT concurrently portrayed as a joyless ***** as women often are in such roles) and she was NEVER portrayed in a position of relatively lower power.

In my mind making women sexy in entertainment, and even showing them being sexually objectified by men, is rarely problematic so long as they're powerful. I think what needs to change is how audiences (well, the men in the audience, at least) view the MEN in such scenes -- that is, with embarrassment or some other form of negativity rather than admiration.

Tomato, tomahto...

Just kidding, you're right. It would have been interesting to be a fly on the wall for the meeting of the suits discussing costume design and audience demographics.

How about that repeated move by Black Widow where she wraps her legs around a guy's head to bring him down? You ever see a guy do that move? She's not the only female who does it in movies and TV but it's always a woman.

The scene with Flash turns WW into an object.
Bull****. YOU make Gadot an object because of how you interpret it. Kinda like a dirty joke, it's only dirty if you have a dirty mind. I know you have latched on to this and you're not going to let go because being right is a huge deal for you, but it's just bull****. The obvious butt shots, yeah. That's bad and served no purpose. Flash falling on WW and then using superspeed to get away before she realized it because he's an awkward kid, that's funny.

Why stop there, though? Why not suit up WW in fatigues? That skirt and bustier is by far the most impractical get up for a superheroine on a movie screen. It makes Halle Berry's catsuit look functional. If they can reimagine Captain Marvel they can do the same for WW so we can all go back to watching a movie without being offended.

Having watched her execute that move hundreds of times, exhaustively even, I don't think that's objectification at all.

I wonder how many times I could find butt shots of the male cast members if I cared enough to count? Unfortunately I'm too busy trying to enjoy the movie to care.

I get and agree with what both of you are pointing out. However, Seba has a point. The uber focus on Gadot (and her butt) was more than obvious, definitely Whedon-like.

I don't disagree with the bitts shots. Those are obvious and shouldn't need the benefit of estrogen to recognize them. Awuaman sitting on the lasso of truth and talking about her appearance seems to be pretty much in character with this uber-macho version of Aquaman. I don't see what's wrong with it unless we now say that from here on out people in movies cannot comment on a woman's appearance, women included.

Maybe read the whole thread before throwing your nickel in. MLU threw out the hypersensitive accusation at me first which is why I used it.

Gal Gado could be reading the constitution in 12 layers of clothing and I would find her attractive. But in this scene she is literally, LITERALLY a sexual object. There's no misinterpreting that. She not the subject of the scene. She's not the focus of the scene. She's a sexual object used as the set up to the joke centered around the Flash. Literally, object that makes the joke go. He's not embarrassed because he landed on a Super Hero or Wonder Woman. He's embarrassed because they ended up on top of her. Now, you just called be a dirty ol' *******, which is fine, but let's not pretend to not understand that laying on someone is sexual. She was the object in that scene nothing more. Of course it was funny. Flash's response was funny. He was the comic relief in the movie. That scene was meant to be funny! And it was! Flash was the focus of the scene, you laughed. Flash's response was great. Perfect comedic timing. Wonder Woman role in that scene was to lay flat and be a pair of breass and a vagina. She was literally a sexual object.

Yep...hypersensitive. I point how one scene was unnecessary and could been done in an nfinite number of ways that didn't objectify one of the leads and you went off the deep end. That's hypersensitive.

Actually, I did. I just see a legitimate difference between the side of initiating criticism of a popcorn movie and someone defending the popcorn nature of it. But, I can see where others may see a distinction without a difference.

Looking at my post, I can see where it may have read like a harsh attack. That wasn't my intent -- notwithstanding the heat coming from MLU, it just seemed to me that if your end message was "agree to disagree' then maybe the ***-for-tat hypersensitivity retort was unnecessary.

You guys have enough heat going for the entire thread -- I'll retreat now with some popcorn and watch from my recliner from here on. :hihi:

Wish we could get back into talking about the movie instead of sexually exploring or non-sexually exploring it is.

I don't think I saw anyone mention the Aquaman underwater scenes. I really liked how it looked.

Also, I was hoping to see the black Superman suit as well. I have a black Superman Under Armor shirt that I wear when I run. I understand he wouldn't have been wearing it when he was buried, but wish they could have come up with a way of getting it on him when they fought each other.

I'm trying.
