Who makes the BEST King Cake?? (3 Viewers)

Nooooooooo! I wish I knew this 2 days ago, I would have gone get one. Sorry... but I'm not going out to the East, it's too far.

Yeah, this really sucks. Apparently, they're selling out in the east just as fast as they were at all the distribution locations. They're going to have to figure something out for a better distribution system for next year. People are flocking to the east this year with the James Beard award and people all around the country asking to be sent cakes, but that extra demand probably will die down for next year.

If they are going to make me drive - not just to the east, but the Village - to get their cakes, I'll find another favorite and maybe get just one of theirs per Mardi Gras or something. If they keep the distribution points shut down next year, I really think they'll regret it.
OK guys, a little secret if you promise not to broadcast it beyond the SR walls. The owner of Pizza Nola still drives out there and picks up a few each day. The place opens at 11am. If you order lunch there ( I got a slice to go) he will sell you one if he still has them in stock. They sell out in about 30 min. Thank me later.

This would have been useful 30 minutes ago!

Just kidding. I will try to hit it up at some point next week.

Cool. Thanks.

After reading all the positive remarks about the Dong Phuong king cake, I decided to give it a try today. I have to say, I find nothing special about it. To me, it is simply OK and probably not something I would go out of my way to get again.

Honestly, I really don't like the Dong Phuong King Cakes at all. And, they really are barely king cakes. I find the whipped icing terrible and the dough is too hard. It has crust almost like French bread. I don't get the hype about them.

If you liked the old-school McKenzies king cakes ... Hi-Do Bakery in Terrytown makes their plain (unfilled) king cakes very close to the McKenzies style.

Has anyone had a king cake from the Tastee on Transcontinental and West Esplanade in Metairie? They do a lot of McKenzies recipes ... was wondering if they did king cake the old way, too.

No one seems to make the old Tastee Donuts teal-and-pink king cakes anymore, but Terrytown Donuts king cakes are pretty close taste-wise -- no plastic clown heads, though :D

Do they have the corner pieces with the half cherry and donut sprinkles on it that some poor kid always got when you brought it to school?

I go out and try tons of them all over the city every year but for me it's pretty hard to beat the ones from Cajun Pecan House down in one of those towns on Bayou Lafourche. They are really really good.

Most overhyped cake has to be Sucre.

Nah, that's one thing the Hi-Do cakes are missing.

(I used to not mind those pieces :D )

I'd eat those at home, but it was definitely a mark of being last one chosen to get it at school.

For some reason I never had a problem trading the cool pb & j for eggsalad on days when those were the sandwiches for lunch though. I can't imagine making eggsalad sandwiches today though.

I lived in the east for 5 years and loved going to Dong Phuong on Saturday mornings. I could get a king cake and a weeks supply of French bread for under $20. I would walk in and out in less than 2 minutes. Now theres a 3 hour wait for king cake! The power of James Beard awards is nuts!

Drive to Duong Phong, get your cake and then eat in the restaurant. Their food is fantastic and cheap. I stop there every time I drive home from work for lunch.

Does rouses make a good cake? Where can i get a decent king cake where the cake is nice and soft with good tasting icing and there's not a 5 mile line of people out the door?
