The Science of Fasting (5 Viewers)

that is all interesting and I don't have a dispute with any of it Marsha, but the part I quoted was in regards to 36 hours being a milestone where you get effects that you would not in a shorter fast.

Yeah, and then there's autophagy. It's not clear whether you get that at 18 hours, 24 hours, or only anything over that. The only thing I think can be fairly clearly stated is that you don't eat, you don't replenish you glycogen stores because it just can't happen.

And beyond that, because I know what I think I know .. or at least I know what I've read for myself with my own 2 eyes and my brain -- I won't listen to "idle" advice (OMG, you're gonna die!). And that's what I want everybody to do. I don't want anybody to take my word on anything. I just know what I've discovered for myself.

Currently going for a 16:8. Which I've got 2 and a half hours to go and I'm not sure I can distract myself enough to get there.

"It seems that there are always concerns about loss of muscle mass during fasting. I never get away from this question. No matter how many times I answer it, somebody always asks, “Doesn’t fasting burn your muscle?”

Let me say straight up, NO.

Here’s the most important thing to remember. If you are concerned about losing weight and reversing T2D, then worry about insulin. Fasting and LCHF will help you. If you are worried about muscle mass, then exercise – especially resistance exercises. OK? Don’t confuse the two issues. We always confuse the two issues because the calorie enthusiast have intertwined them in our minds like hamburgers and french fries.

Weight loss and gain is mostly a function of DIET. You can’t exercise your way out of a dietary problem. Remember the story of Peter Attia? A highly intelligent doctor and elite level distance swimmer, he found himself on the heavy end of the scale, and it was not muscle. He was overweight despite exercising 3-4 hours a day. Why? Because muscle is about exercise, and fat is about diet. You can’t out-run a bad diet.

Muscle gain/ loss is mostly a function of EXERCISE. You can’t eat your way to more muscle. Supplement companies, of course, try to convince you otherwise. Eat creatine (or protein shakes, or eye of newt) and you will build muscle. That’s stupid. There’s one good way to build muscle – exercise. So if you are worried about muscle loss – exercise. It ain’t rocket science. Just don’t confuse the two issues of diet and exercise. Don’t worry about what your diet (or lack of diet – fasting) is doing to your muscle. Exercise builds muscle. OK? Clear?"

This may be the dumbest fitness related advice I've ever read.

Care to explain why and your credentials vis a vis the topic? I'd like to know if you are coming from a place of science, experience, or both before I accept as factual your statement.

I'm curious why you felt it necessary to even respond with a one-sentence criticism and offering zero in rebuttal for how you arrive at this opinion.

It's also not "fitness advice". It's dietary advice.

The tone of that quote from the article is a bit hoity toity. He could post in the "What's your snob nobbin thread?"

quickest way to fast is bipolar depression. so, uh, yeah, y’all are doing it wrong (intermittent fasting is fantastic, but i lost too much weight not trying).

I am in the middle of a 36 hour fast and I think I may continue. I definitely can tell some sort of detox is happening. I have a strange almost metallic taste in my mouth.

I have been doing the 18 hour daily fast for over two weeks now. I can tell a difference if I consume alcohol or not the next day. (fatigue stomach acidity ect.)

During my 36 hour fast I have not consumed any alcohol. I am gonna start trying to do one or two 36+ hour fasts a week.

As I just finished my 3 bacon egg bean n cheese tacos to soak up last nights beer n fireball soiree with da boys, I am intrigued by this fasting ritual...must decide what day to begin this adventure...

anecdote just for shiggles... I have eaten bacon almost every day on my trek from 270 to 225.

"We give this day our daily bacon"

Bacon is like totally awesome. It’s a pretty perfect HFLC food.

Congratulations! You have keto breath!

Okay, I found and read this thread over the weekend. I watched the documentary posted by Expat in the OP. Fascinating and almost unbelievable.

I intend to do more research and re-read the thread because of the many good posts.

I'd like to give this a go, but I don't want to do it unsafely and I haven't done the homework. Because of lent I'm attempting a fast for Ash Wednesday (last meal was last night at about 19:00). What are the rules to fasting - just water? Any nuts or broth, etc.?

I'm hoping to go at least 36 hours.

And does someone have a link to the 8-hour eating window that was mentioned earlier?

I'm sure I'll be back with more questions, later - if I don't pass out. Thanks in advance.

I dont know the "rules" but I drink only water and black coffee while "fasting."
