TV HBO picks up George RR Martin series - Game of Thrones (1 Viewer)

Thanks for sharing. I didn't know any of this.
It's all from memory(and a quick attempt at finding some of the old articles from that time) so I wouldn't take it as 100% reliable, but I think the broad strokes are pretty safe.

Rome was easily my favorite TV show on cable when it was on. I always figured they just ran out of storyline.

I think if GoT flipped it’s politics/religion emphasis, and was set in space, it would be Battlestar Gallactica
I wish Fox hadn't totally bungled Space Above and Beyond. It could have easily have rivaled Galactica.

Oh and I forgot to mention Killjoys. It's a bit unpolished, but it has some good story.

We're mostly discussing "operatic" shows, but I think 'Justified' often gets overlooked in discussing great shows
sometimes the plotting hot a bit strained in the later seasons but great characters and knockout performanc es

Justified was hands down my favorite show in terms of dialogue. Great show too in other ways.

From my understanding Rome was cancelled along with Deadwood because the company went though a stupidity period after The Sopranos(which also helped kill of Carnivale a few years earlier). And I would argue they still haven’t fully recovered from that.

Not really because of GoT. As the rights to GoT came after the announcement to end Rome after its second season. GoT was the make up for quickly realizing how badly they forked up killing off all their premiere dramas during a period before they recognized DVR, subscription retainment, overseas sales, buzz factor, and DVD sales should be factored into their formulas for determining show and network success. It was also simultaneously a period when they were trimming series overhead costs to the bone and wanting everything to operate on the budget of Sex and the City and Entourage unless you were The Sopranos. It’s why David Milch was pushed to move on from Deadwood to John from Cincinnati and you got a bunch of replacement dramas like Big Love and True Blood that were much cheaper to produce.

I wish I could find the quote but the new execs that came in after that era of penny pinching blew up in their faces basically said that had they factored in DVD sales and other metrics they now use to determine show success(which partially came out of recognizing they screwed up here) Rome would of never been cancelled. They would of said fork the BBC’s cold feet and soldiered on.
hbo forked up when they canceled carnivale. honestly, other than the wire, best show hbo produced.

canceling rome was just another sign of stupidity.

From what I remember reading they basically had 5-6 seasons mapped out already, all the way up to the growth of Christianity and Jesus’s influence.

I think they said season 2 ultimately was like 2-3 seasons condensed into one and it sort of shows with how much things jump around and how many plot points they sped through. But to their credit I never really realized until after the fact and I read about it which is a testament to how well they pulled it off.

On a side note I would love to see someone build a Rome show out of the recent historical work The Storm Before The Storm by Mike Duncan. It’s a period of Roman history that is incredibly topical and fascinating and also one that has yet to be really tapped. It is basically the history of the period before the fall of the Roman Republic and the players and historical moments that laid the foundation for Caesar to eventually dissolve the Republic. Lots of fascinating events and characters like the Grachii Borthers, Gaius Marius, and Lucius Sulla. The latter basically being the final template for Julius Caesar to kick over the Republic.

Loved Carnivàle. The show seeped atmosphere and potential.

Can’t forget Deadwood either.

Perhaps the best writing and dialogue on TV ever. Milch’s masterpiece that got cut down in it’s prime....though I guess we are at least finally getting one of the two promised movies from years ago, which I have low expectations for.

It really is crazy but there was a period where HBO had Carnivàle, The Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, The Wire, and Rome on their docket. And they threw half of those away for self destructive penny pinching replacements like Big Love, John From Cincinnati, and Tell Me you Love Me.

They easily could have dragged the storyline for a while.

Between Juilius Caesar's assasination, and Marc Antony/Cleopatra's defeat and subsequent suicide actuqally took 13 years (44 BC - 31. BC). As it was, that was covered entirely in one season.

Deadwood was crazy good. so was Carnivale and Rome. Many a good show killed before their time.
