CNN affiliate KTRK reported. Deputies said the suspect pulled up next to the car and opened fire.

Gonzalez said the girl’s mother, LaPorsha Washington, 30, was wounded. The sheriff’s office said glass fragments injured a younger child. Two teens were unharmed.

The mother and daughter are black. The suspect, who authorities are describing as a white male in his 40s, fled the scene in a red truck.

I hope they find this disturbed individual. Maybe this was just a road rage incident, but the racial overtones are quite obvious.

I don't know what to say beyond that except it's bitterly disappointing that lives are so valueless to some people.

What are these racial overtones. I've read the report and the only mention of race is in the description of victim and suspect. This might be racially motivated but nothing I've seen so for indicates that. I hope this dirtbag gets everything he deserves for killing this child.

I for one think we need to bring back public execution by hanging...

The way I see it... if it deters anyone from this kind of sheet.. An innocent person like that little girl may be alive today...

I personally can't wait until they catch this guy. I would like to know what could possible motivate this guy to do something like this. Racism, drugs, alcohol, bad marriage, mental illness, road rage, or gun happy killer??? And see justice done.

firing squad could work too. i would support either option.

it doesn't
there is no evidence to suggest public execution is a deterrent
and more often than not if you can choose a way to be less like Saudi Arabia, you choose it

a few things...

first, if people want the death penalty as a means of retributive justice, that's one thing - I disagree with it, for personal/spiritual reasons - that I can reasonably understand

secondly, if people want it because it's going to be a deterrent, I don't believe it's a justifiable reason. It's pretty well established that the death penalty is ineffective as a deterrent and were capital punishment removed, it would have no discernible impact on crime

thirdly, the notion of public executions as a death penalty isn't new - and it used to be really, really effective. You have to go back several hundred years. And a bit of reading and learning, and you'll see that there are pretty clear reasons why it stopped being effective. And nothing has changed socioculturally in us that would make it effective again.

fourth, there are places on this earth where public executions are still practiced - and yet, crimes that result in public execution sentences still happen - when we are talking about compulsions or beliefs in an individual, especially someone as disturbed as the assailant in the OP must be, the mental processes aren't likely going to be something that will no longer happen, which brings me to my final point.

Fifth and finally, when it comes to the state taking a life, I think it has to be something taken very seriously and without a shadow of a doubt - but the problem is that our judicial and legislative systems are not infallible.

Now, a common reply is - "but what about the cases that are disturbing and violent and proof is indisputable - what about then?" And my answer would be that what we decide to do - as a system of government and society - is reflective of us and our beliefs. I do not think that the US should be a country that hangs people from the Huey P Long Bridge - no matter how heinous that person's acts are. I think if we are going to have a death penalty, then a 'humane' death penalty is something more in line with what the US is about.

Obviously, if someone did something gruesome, a common reply is, "Well did you see what they did to this innocent child?" Yes. What they did was inhumane and grotesque. At that point, it becomes what we are about and not what the person did. But I can understand the desire to see something horrible done to someone who did something horrible - but that brings us back to the retribution point at the beginning.

I agree it's not very effective for general deterrence, but for specific deterrence it works pretty damn well.

Today,.. after a conviction it takes years before execution takes place... by then the violence and the crime is all but forgotten except for the family...

Hang a mofo and put that sheet on twitter... word will get around fast...

Oklahoma's last execution was botched and death for the criminal was not instantanious... But it's hard to feel bad when the young girl victim was beaten, raped and then buried alive until she passed...

Have they found this guy yet?

do you know why there's so much time between conviction and the execution of a death sentence?

it was 30 years for Anthony Ray Hinton.

Should he have been put to death sooner?

Hang a mofo and put that shirt on twitter... word will get around fast...

and?

This says nothing to any of the points raised. It would be a gruesome spectacle, sure. But that doesn't mean it would be effective. In fact most everything we know from the last few hundred years post-medieval period indicates that it wouldn't be.

Oklahoma's last execution was botched and death for the criminal was not instantanious...

so it was a gruesome, and drawn out, and torturous, and more painful death sentence

were there any murders in Oklahoma after that 45 minutes of "writhing, convulsing, groaning" execution back in 2014? Did that gruesome, botched, drawn out death sentence prevent another murder from being committed?

Not sure if I care whether it deters them or not, but a quick and brutal execution would suit me fine. Or starvation/suffocation in a closed casket.

Well we sure haven't had any innocent young girls buried alive since then that's for sure...

Negative. Capital punishment should be an eye for an eye. Someone rapes and murders a child the family should get to choose how the murderer dies and perform the execution. It would save tax payers a fortune and maybe, just maybe it would deter a crime from someone knowing that killing someone else can result in a worse way to go.

But none of this eye witness heresy to convict. 100% DNA and /or video.
