Best Grunge song ever? (1 Viewer)

can we discuss how 'grunge' isn't even a genre or sub-genre of music??

Gadfly? Well I guess Shostakovich rocks. lol No hard feelings.
Sorry I was picking up my kid from school and I was putting a place holder answer:

I don’t really have a problem with grunge - I’m the generation older than grunge (but my wife LOVES it -STP for her)
So I have a general appreciation but no deep cut like most of the posters here, so...

Traffic: wed of the ee is often slow esp with an active SSF, so if there is a (potentially) interesting thread - even if it’s not a wheelhouse topic- I’ll comment just to keep it at the top
Gadfly: sometimes threads can be just a list of things - which, speaking of Chris Farley, can be a bit like his ‘yeah, that was great’ interview guy - so sometimes I’ll just gadfly to juice a thread a bit

Comme ca

If you like. It was a movement, mostly in Seattle, that I think was the last great era of rock. Rock is, of course, a musical genre.

there isn't really a lot of similarity between Soundgarden and say, Nirvana that you could put them in the same sub-genre...and AiC doesn't have a lot in common with Pearl Jam

i don't know, 'grunge' has always seemed to be a lazy grouping of some rock bands that came from the same area despite sounding different

Well, of course they sounded different, and you may have a point about labeling it "grunge", I just assumed people would relate. Simple as that. But some of these groups had close ties. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden were close. Listen to Temple of the Dog Hunger Strike. And Mother Love Bone was a huge influence on a lot of them.

Smells like teen spirit

How is it anything but this? I get that it became so extremely popular that it tarnished its grunginess (made that word up) but it has to be the answer.

Btw, if I ever start a band the name will be Tarnished Grunge.

The same way Tupac sounded totally different and had a very different style than Biggie, but they're grouped together as 90s gangsta rap.

I remember when it first played on MTV. I was away from the room but heard it and immediately was drawn to it. Thinking " Oh my God, this is amazing" lol

You're right. With the possible exception of Nirvana, all of the other Seattle grunge bands can arguably be said to fit more neatly in existing sub genres of rock. Alice in Chains had obvious metal characteristics that the much more Alternative/college rock Pearl Jam didnt. Stone Temple Pilots were a pretty standard mainstream rock band by many metrics. Grunge is a non genre.
