Best Grunge song ever? (1 Viewer)

It's easy to pick a Nirvana song but they're kinda like The Beatles of grunge. But it's hard to deny that song is kind of the anthem of the Gen Xers that grew up in the early/mid-90's.

So the favorite to me is Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Underdog: Plush (STP)

Longshot: Bleed the Freak (AiC) Bleed the Freak just sounds super grungy to me. Maybe my favorite AiC song.

Honorable mention: Soundgarden 4th of July. It also has that super grunge sound.

Most important or best has to go to Smells Like Teen Spirit.

My personal favorites are Pearl Jam's Black and Alice in Chains' Down in a Hole (I can't pick on so please don't make me)

I too am more of an 80's rock fan but I do like most music and at the time I hated grunge but as I got older and expanded my tastes I came to like it. The problem I have is forgetting songs and then hearing one and then thinking how good it is. If you're looking for the greatest I think you have to go with the song that kicked it off....teen spirit. Personally I liked smashing pumpkins a little better after nirvana was done.....1979 is a great tune.

Though 1979 is not on it, Siamese Dream is an awesome album.

I was a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan. I still dig a lot of their older stuff.

SP is another band from the “grunge” era with their own distinct sound/style.

Full disclosure, I'm 45 and a "hair band" type music listener. I blame Nirvana for ruining the best decade of metal there ever was......

Music perspectives can be so funny. I praise Nirvana for ending the worst decade of rock music there ever was...

Of all the rock subgenres, and we can disagree on whether grunge or hair bands are in fact subgenres or genres of their own, I think hair bands/metal is easily the most fadtastic with the least amount of staying power.

I recently just heard a new song he has out under William Patrick Corgan. Different but I thought it was decent. Guy is an excellent writer.
I'll look for it, thanks. Yeah, a great writer but seems to be so depressive. He wrote a song for the Pumpkins that's not well known called "Ugly". One of the saddest songs I've ever heard.

So to me "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is easily number one. By the way, the story behind the name of the song is pretty funny and I think it kind of encapsulates the generation Xer high school experience, the last generation before social media really took hold. It's hard to explain but I totally get it. Graffiti, rebellion, good-natured teasing between friends and the inability to access any information with the touch your finger tips led to one of the most iconic songs and song titles of the last 50 years.

So that's the best to me, but then I got to thinking, what is my #2? The song that kept coming to me was Creep by Radiohead. My first thought was, "is that even considered grunge?" A quick look on Wikipedia and it is in fact listed as alternative - grunge. What say you? Does Creep belong in the conversation?
