Why teams don’t value a good kicker (1 Viewer)

After I watched the Parker miss, I know it was partially tipped but that seems to mean he is still partially to be blamed for the kick. The old saying is that one okay doesn’t define a play but sometimes it really does. I still remember the missed scott Norwood kick and without vinitieri, the Brady as know would not be even remotely the same as how we view him. Vinietieri is the one for the first 3 sbs that made all the game winning kicks. What I don’t understand is why a lot of teams don’t pay more for a good kicker. To me, having a great kicker is super important. If it means paying them many millions, so be it,

Your thoughts? Think how life would be so different for bills fans if Norwood makes that kick which for an average kicker the chances were greater than 50 percent it goes in.

I just know that when you find a good one you don’t let them leave as a free agent... never. They seem easy to replace, but they aren’t.

Their salaries range from 4.3 million/year to 480k a year. Not sure what your point is. The Arizona Cardinals can’t just decide they want Tucker or Gostowksi and get them on their team.

this just really confuses me. It’s ljke saying, why don’t more teams go out and get a Tom Brady that can win 5 Super Bowls. Teams address their needs. You don’t go and pay a kicker 5 million a year if your team sucks and you need that money elsewhere. That being said, I’m sure a team like Chicago that has proven they are close to being a legit contender, can now afford to focus more on their kicking game. That is a luxury.

Well paying parkey that much seems ridiculous to begin with. Talked to some Chicago fans and they say he has missed a bunch of kicks this year. I feel like when kickers get in a rut, it is so hard for them to get out of it psychologically speaking.

Well that is the confusing thing. Is it that hard to find 32 kickers in the entire world that can most of the time kick a 45 yarder through the uprights?

Maybe I am wrong but I would easily rather pay 5 million to get a great kicker than pay 5 million to add an average linebacker or receiver.

Yeah, but he is the exception. Usually the kickers making a lot of money seem to make more clutch kicks. Why the bears paid him so much is beyond me when he has been missing a lot of kicks. And his money is guaranteed so they are stuck with him.

Staying with a kicker like parkey who has missed a lot of kicks, to me, the onus falls on Chicago. Seems like once a kicker loses his mojo he hardly ever gets it back.

This is simply not true.

1 for 5 on attempts of 40+ yards or more on grass fields. It was not in his range at all.

Norwood was not the reason they lost that game. He didn't cause their offense to score only two touchdowns all day (they scored 51 points in the AFCCG and then only 19 in the Super Bowl with just two TDs all day). He didn't make them go 1 for 8 on third down. He didn't tell them to stop running the ball when Thurman Thomas was averaging 9 yards per carry.

Back in 1990, there really wasn't many long leg kickers back then like now. Outside of Morten Andersen, it's hard to name another kicker that could nail these kind of kicks consistently. Lin Elliott was pretty good for a few years but his name will forever be associated with the 3 misses in the 1995 Chiefs/Colts game (all those misses were shorter than Norwood's distance). Us Saints fans will find it difficult to believe that John Carney back in the day was one of the better kickers of that era when he was with the Chargers. Carney actually ranks in the top 5 all time on field goal percentage.
