Why teams don’t value a good kicker (1 Viewer)

Sure seems like it. Or if you just pay a kicker more money then he suddenly kicks better. All teams should have great kickers it seems, which is impossible due to the relative term of ‘great’ then changing.
No, as I said only like ten really good kickers and pay whatever it takes to get one of those premium ten kickers or so. It is easy to say why waste all that money on a kicker until it happens to your team. Am sure Chicago and minny fans would have no problems paying 5 million to get a clutch kicker.

A lot of kickers give clues early on before they totally tank. For example, the Chicago fans I talked to said parkey had hit the crossbar in one game four times.

Yeah I don’t see how the bears offense can complain when parkey scored more
Parkey-9
Bears O - 6
Haha
Look it’s easy to say this that it isn’t the kickers fault if they miss an all important kick under 50 yards when it is not our team. When it happens to our team, I can guarantee you that these rational answers you’re giving won’t be like this.

Well, each game is different my friend and in that particular game I watched I felt the bears had plenty of possessions ( probably about 8 or 9 lol) and they scored a total of 6 pts. Blame who you wish ! All opinions simmer down

You’re absolutely right. The bears on so many levels screwed up in that game. My simple point is if somehow though at the end if it comes down to a kicker, which they do a lot, for better or worse, their season’s fate hinges on that kick, that’s all., which is unfortunate but that’s the way it is.

Pretty sure the difficulty of kicking a football through uprights from 45 yards is being diminished in this thread. Now add in snapping and kicking before someone smashes you to the ground and it's gets just a little harder. There is also a mental aspect to kicking that if a kicker misses a few it get's in his head making the next kick harder mentally.
I think teams get the best kicker they can find but there are only so many Morton Anderson quality kickers and the difference between Morton and the worst in the NFL isn't that much. That's why an obviously overweight and out of shape Janikowski got to embarrass himself in the last week of the season. Even though he was too old and out of shape he had the mental discipline to kick reliably so he was kept on the team.

Of course they want a great kicker, but how may of those are there?

I appreciate your comments kris but I think a 45 yarder is about a 60 percent chance or so of making it for an average kicker. Yes, there are many variables to a kicking game, but that is their sole job. They are not battling in the trenches and their other duties such as trying to do an onside kick or kickoffs are secondary. I have yet to see a kicker who can’t kick it to the end zone on kickoffs. Anyway, I won’t say anymore about this but I think it is very unfortunate that so many important games ends with the fate of the kicker. Let’s enjoy this weekend games!

Not a lot, but one doesn’t necessarily need a great kicker. An above average kicker or good kicker works for me so I am not talking about the saints. My analogy was lutz was bad. My point with that was just imagine if our team had a below average kicker how would we feel if the game came down to the kick. Of course one can never be fully accurate with how kickers will kick but moreso, is the kicker more likely than not, going to kick a reasonable kick through the uprights in clutch time? If so, then pay a lot to get an above average kicker. Just ask minny, Chicago and bills fans and they will tell you the same since they felt that pain.

One assumes that the kicker made the team because the coaches felt he could make the kicks they needed him to.

Well that’s the dilemma where coaches like Tampa bay and Cleveland were quoted how their kicker made all the kicks in practice games, yet, in every game that mattered, they missed important kicks. Peace out.
