Hawaii considering the ban of cigarette sales to anyone under age 100 by the year 2024 (1 Viewer)

What they should actually do is ban smoking in all public spaces and anywhere the smoke can affect public spaces.

It still boggles my mind that in the year 2019, that a.) people still smoke and b.) it is still legal to do so in public.

Hopefully this starts a trend of phasing this out.

What they should actually do is ban smoking in all public spaces and anywhere the smoke can affect public spaces.

If part of the premise is that smokers bring substantial costs into the medical system that must be then distributed through the system (and borne, in part, by non-smokers and other funds), simply taking public smoking out of the equation won't address that objective.

If it is a true premise (and I suspect it is), it's no longer simply a question keeping smokers from impacting others with their smoke.

Of course, moving into social regulation based on shared healthcare costs is a pandora's box.

FIRST OFF LET ME STATE THIS: I 100% agree that teens should not be vaping. However, the amount of teens smoking has dramatically decreased. I am not saying one should be traded off for the other, but there certainly is reason to believe it has decreased due to vaping.

The truth about popcorn lung: So, in the entire history of mankind, the ONLY 8 people have ever diagnosed with popcorn lung and all worked in a plant that made microwave popcorn. It is BELIEVED that it came from an ingredient called diacetyl which gives popcorn it's butter flavor. It was discovered in a Harvard Study conducted in 2015 that some E Liquids do contain trace amounts of diacetyl (almost all of the E Cig industry has since removed flavorings contain diacetyl since this report it should be noted). So the narrative was that Vaping could lead to popcorn lung.

The actually truth is that there has been NO evidence to show that Vaping leads to popcorn lung. In fact, NO ONE has ever been diagnosed with it from vaping. And something that may surprise you is that the levels of diacetyl in a normal cigarette is over THOUSANDS of times higher then any E Liquid tested. E Liquid contained roughly 9 micrograms of diacetyl while traditional cigarettes show 6,718 micrograms of it. And to date , NO ONE has been diagnosed with popcorn lung via smoking either.

AND believe it or not, non-smokers may be more at a risk then people who vape or smoke according to one study from 2012:

"Moreover, a separate study about occupational popcorn lung published in 2012 paradoxically held that non-smokers may be at higher risk for popcorn lung than smokers are:

The 2015 research from Harvard omitted comparison to a far larger and more established control group of smokers when asserting concerns about diacetyl, popcorn lung, and e-cigarettes. Prior research into tobacco cigarettes (which contain measurably higher levels of diacetyl and are more commonly used than e-cigarettes) determined that smoking is not a risk factor for popcorn lung, so the lower concentrations of diacetyl in e-cigarette juices are not likely a risk factor in popcorn lung."

I've read on popcorn lung in the past and knew is an ongoing debate....I don't think you can just dismiss it though because diacetyl is used in some flavors. "It's not as bad as regular cigarettes" doesn't really work for me either. At the end of the day if someone is an adult making adult decisions I have zero objections. It's when it's so readily available to kids that I have a problem. E cigs still have nicotine and nicotine is a highly addictive drug. The concentrations can be varied also. I think the public in general isn't taking teen use serious enough. Here's a good article. Like I say.....not against it in general. Just against it being so available to kids.

Even if you're paying for it?

From 2014:

(Reuters) - Of every $10 spent on healthcare in the U.S., almost 90 cents is due to smoking, a new analysis says.

Using recent health and medical spending surveys, researchers calculated that 8.7 percent of all healthcare spending, or $170 billion a year, is for illness caused by tobacco smoke, and public programs like Medicare and Medicaid paid for most of these costs.

“Fifty years after the first Surgeon General’s report, tobacco use remains the nation’s leading preventable cause of death and disease, despite declines in adult cigarette smoking prevalence,” said Xin Xu from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), who led the study.

Over 18 percent of U.S. adults smoke cigarettes and about one in five deaths are caused by smoking, according to the CDC.

Do you think insurance companies would pass on any savings to it's customers if everyone quit smoking? They would just find the next thing to blame it's broken system on.

Medicare and Medicaid are public-funded, not for profit. I think those costs are audited and attributed.

Like I say.....not against it in general. Just against it being so available to kids.

it's no more available to kids than cigarettes, booze, gambling, etc. have been for decades....

Are you being paid by these people? Lol. And I think a lot of these vaping companies are owned by tobacco conglomerates anyway. When it comes down to it nicotine itself is carcinogenic no matter where you get it from. I don't think inhaling vaporized glycol that contains nicotine is much better than smoking. Nicotine free is the only way to really quit.

Read the article

reading the article didn't make vaping more available to kids

look, i don't think kids should be vaping...but there are currently laws in place that make selling the stuff to minors illegal....beyond that, i don't know what else we can do...

my point was that kids will find ways get their hands on cigarettes, booze, weed, etc....and it's pretty likely that they don't consider the ramifications of using those things...that's sort of what teenagers do best

Well . . . he's isn't smoking cigarettes anymore, am I right?
