For A Startup, I Think The AAF Had A Successful Debut (2 Viewers)

I watched two games. Announcers mentioned several times how the teams only had a month to get ready, so I think the games will get better as the season progresses. Overall, I enjoyed watching and like the fact they didn't cut to commercials as often. And it was interesting to listen in on the sky judge making their decisions.

The rule where you can only rush 5 pass rushers on Defense is laughable and should be changed if this league wants any credibility going forward.

Other than that I thought the games were average at best, there was a lot of mediocrity sprinkled in with moments of excitement on big hits, interceptions, trick plays... but a whole lot of bad Quarterback play was pretty consistent. The Arizona game tonight featured some better QB play
but the AAF gets a Meh for me for now.. it's Football and a developmental league but you can tell the quality and consistency aren't there yet.

I believe the biggest reason for the 5 man is safety right now. There hasn’t been enough time for the teams to gel. 5 weeks of practice is all they’ve had. I can definitely see that changing, probably during the season.

I enjoyed the games. It gave me my football fix. While not top notch in quality, there was enough there for me to like. For only being together for a month, I can give them a pass in not looking completely in tune. I do expect to see things looking better and sharper in the coming weeks, though. I know that I'll keep watching. I like the faster pace of the game.

It worked for me.

I like just about all of it

The Evel kenvel looking refs and no kickoffs is about the worst of it.

Am kinda interested in how the onsides kick replacement works for real. I know the 4 and 12 will be hard to convert but would like to see it.

As a sort of minor league to the NFL, it’ll never really be able to compete with the NFL.

The NFL will always have the best players since they get to draft first and they get dibs on guys that they want in the AAF.

The only way to compete with the NFL is to allow big money to lure players, put them in a nice stadium and have massive media exposure. None of that would be easy. Even if they met these requirements, it won’t be easy. The NFL is, afterall, a quasi government, media, sports collusion the likes of which has never been seen. Paying guys 70k a year isn’t going to get it. The USFL had money and they had some real talent for a while. They sued the NFL for anti trust. They won but only got $1. Then they got crushed when they tried to move to the same season as the NFL.

This new league is an NFL controlled farm league. It’s testing markets and hopefully going to hinder plans to form a true competitor backed by McMahon and others in the XFL. Note that the AAF players cannot get out of their contact to play in the XFL buy can to play in the NFL. They’re getting a headstart to build fan support and brand loyalty before the XFL starts next year.

Trying to avoid politics here but lets just say that some in politics hate the NFL and the kneeling really set them off. These people are friends with McMahon.

Anyway, I’ll watch it but have no illusions that this is something that will ever compete with the NFL. It’s the NFL’s little toy. They might allow more hitting and thus get some excitement that the NFL sanitized but just wait til the first big injury.... I kinda feel sorry for these players.

I can’t compare it to the USFL because I wasn’t around, but I think this was everything you could ask for in a debut spring football league.
I think this may be the League that stays.

Well, now that I know that the AAF is in bed with the NFL, it's no more watching that for me!

And, when I tuned in for a bit last night and they stated "Well, the right team was in the SB." and then the other announcer stated, "Well, I guess a lot of people just changed the channel in New Orleans.", he was right,

Not only did I change the channel, but I decided then and there not to come back.

To be honest, if I didn't frequent this site, I would've never heard of AAF. In fact, last week I had to look it up, because I kept seeing it, but had no idea what it was. I don't watch a lot of broadcast TV, but I do turn it on every morning so I can listen to the weather report as I get ready for work. Not once has AAF ever been mentioned, so I'm not sure it's as popular as people are making it out to be. Have there been any commercials? How did all of you hear about it, because this site is still the only place I've ever seen or heard it mentioned.

What's weird on the ESPN website is that they have a few articles on the AAF, but they don' show any info on the actual games played.

No scores, no live updates, etc.

:idunno:

Since the league airs during Mardi Gras season they’d sell a decent amount of purple green n gold merch if they had a Revelers or Jesters team. ? juuuuuuust throwing ideas out there for free to the lurkers

A team would also be a good excuse to renovate Tad Gormley or aggravate the NIMBYs uptown

The NFL has nothing to worry about from the XFL. It failed in 2001. It’ll fail in 2020. If you look at Vince’s record, he’s failed at everything outside of wrestling. The World Bodybuilding Federation. The XFL. Nightclub and Casinos. He’s failed.
Even the messaging is the same. Just in a different direction. Using the XFL name was a bad decision. It already has the stench of failure. Overall it’s like a PG-13 remake of a bad 90s R rated movie. That’s my analysis of the new XFL.

I think the AAF will be the one to survive. It’s backed by the NFL, it’s run by football people, a year head start with positive buzz, and it doesn’t have Vince McMahon playing Mr. McMahon.

I agree that xfl will fail. I too am not a fan of McMahon. He just reeks of illegitimacy. I wouldn’t mind seeing a legitimate professional football league step in to compete though.

I just hope people aren’t hoping the AAF is going to somehow compete with the NFL as an independent football league. They’re not. It’s not their intent.

They’re started broadcasting games on the NFL Network. I think it’s clear it’s intended to be the spring/minor league to the NFL.

I've been hearing it talked about on sports radio for several months.

That wasn't the sky judge, that was the replay official. But, yes, I liked hearing the thought process.

I read this morning that the ratings for the nationally televised game were better than the premier NBA game at the same time.
