Saints involved in trade talks for Robert Quinn (Update: Will visit Saints Monday 3/25) (1 Viewer)

At the LEAST, I see both as upgrades.

IMO, Quinn is a quicker, faster version of Okafor.

Cook will likely be more productive than any TE we’ve had the last 2 seasons.

And both fill needs that would allow us to go BPA come the draft.

We’ll see.

If we get Quinn, with the additions made to the defense in FA so far, and with the return of Patrick Robinson, this defense will be Top 3. I will bet a Monsoon at Port O Call that Latt and Marcus Williams show up for OTAs and camp much better prepared and conditioned than they did during last year's sophomore slumps. I suspect Curtis may be sleeping at their houses a few times per week to ensure these 2 young stars are ready to ascend to the elite in the game this year.

In 2018, Quinn was traded for a 4th round and a swap of 6th rounds between Miami and Rams. Peat has a lot more trade value than that.

Health aside, I really think Peat could be a top 5-6 LT in the NFL if he played there full time..

The problem is we have a top 3 LT when he is healthy, which is why Peat plays LG where he is still a top 10 player IMO

I like to be positive about our players, and I've even said Peat is above average at LG when 100% healthy. Above average is probably a stretch. Many would consider him below average. Top 6 at any position for Peat is absurd.

This past season shows how good the left side of our line is, even when not 100%..

Unger played through and injury that pretty much ended his career, Peat played through nagging injuries and a broken hand (severely impacts your ability to block), Armsteas played through a torn pec, and yet we were still arguably the best O-Line in the NFL.. There is no reason to believe that a 100% healthy Peat is not a top 10 Guard, or could be a top 6 LT

Other than watching him play those positions, even when healthy...

And our offensive line was nowhere near the best in the NFL late in the season.

If you evaluate Peat strictly at LG, I would say he is not a natural LG. Not enough sand in the butt. Coming out of college he was a LT, he was considered a better fit at RT in the pros according to most scouting reports. Circumstances prevented him from making the switch to RT bc we already had a good RT in Zach Strief. We had also had a great LT. So, the dilemma was where to put him. I believe he does not look as good to some bc he is playing out of position.

Peat's best position is LG. He couldn't play RT because he wasn't good at it, which is why Ramczyk is there. He was also tried at RG and couldn't cut it. He hasn't been very good at LT when he's played there. He's a decent LG who can be a below average (to put it nicely) LT in an emergency.

That's some revisionist history. It wasn't circumstances that prevented him from playing RT, it was his talent. He was awful at it forcing us to spend a pick on Ramzyck (thank God he developed so quickly). With Armstead locked in at guard the only spot left for him was LG where he's been average at best when healthy. And he's definitely not the stud that some make him out to be at tackle.

He's not bust worthy but he's been a disappointment from the start when he showed up to camp out of shape.

I think that your opinion and some others on the board have morphed into a perceived truth regarding Peat's talent level. You know how people on this board tend to go with the herd mentality. Just cause more than one says it don't make it true. No one has ever quoted Saints management or a football expert that he could not play RT to my knowledge.

Strief was playing RT when Peat came onboard in 2015. Strief did not retire until 2018. Hard to beat out a veteran. Ramcyzk did not start at RT till Strief went down in October 2017. By then Peat was entrenched at LG. This also allowed the Saints to take advantage of his flexibility to kick out to LT when needed which has been quite often.

Peat did not have in my opinion enough reps and time to switch during the 2015 preseason from playing with his left in the ground to his right. This article from Advocate discusses how difficult it is to switch from LT to RT.

I will admit I am wrong if you would please do some research and find out where Payton or some other football expert with some credibility said he can't play RT. Otherwise, we just have a difference of opinion.

"He hasn’t played very well over on that right side. So we’ve gotta keep looking and pay close attention to it. I was hoping that we were able to put him in one spot. But I know what he can do well, and we’ve gotta find a way for him to be at a high enough level inside. And I think we can get that done."

Frankly I'm surprised I found that quote. It's not often you'll hear a coach say that about a number 1 draft pick. Just goes to show how bad he was during camp and preseason games.

"Peat's played a lot of snaps a year ago. I expect him to be better. Now, it might be more over on the left side. We've moved him around enough, and we've got to settle in on where we feel like this player's going to play, whether it's the right or the left side."

This is from the same article, in reference to seeing him play at both RT and RG. He was bad.
