In the Sean Payton era, which picks were you the MOST WRONG about (good or bad)? (1 Viewer)

Alvin Kamara. I remember being furious that we traded up for a running back. The defense needed help and we were trading up for a running back. Needless to say I was not happy. What a fool I was.

Didn't understand the Alvin Kamara pick at all.........

I've seen this sentiment here and in other threads where some "didn't like" or "didn't understand" the pick at first...........and while the whole point of this thread is about admitting incorrectness.................I do have to ask, why were some so anti-Kamara? He was initially viewed as the next Bush / Sproles type of RB in our offense (obviously he ended up being so much more)....which Payton usually made a point to have in this offense......so what was the gripe? Was it because we'd signed Adrian Peterson just a few days prior to that draft?

We have a LOT of different points of view in the WhoDat Nation. I can deal with pretty much any of them... as long as they aren't rude or flame others who aren't reading from the same sheet of music (as they are).

Definitely not bashing anyone who was initially anti-Kamara................just curious as to why some were against the pick, considering we didn't have that type of RB on the roster right then.

I imagine only a select-few can truly say they were "right" about Kamara.........whether that means they didn't want him.............or whether it means they didn't know how truly good he would be.

I was one who could not believe that we drafted Kamara. I wasn’t anti Kamara specifically. I was just wanting to see the Saints use high draft picks on the defense. I felt the defense needed the help and the offense was fine. What an idiot I was.

Good: Cam Jordan... Just didn't see the flash that I wanted with that pick... Glad to be wrong!

Bad: Sederick Ellis... I thought he was going to be our Warren Sapp. He helped win a SB, but was never the player he should have been.

My exact feeling

I think bush was a borderline bust for the saints. Nowhere near what he should have been out of USC. I would have bet everything I have he would be at least a 4yd per carry back. Took till year four to get over that. By then he was only getting 5 touches a game rushing.

His second season he fumbled the ball like all the time. It was mind bending.

I still don't get all the love for him here.

On the other hand Alvin is the most complete back in the league. When I think of all time great backs only a few I would rather have in their prime and most are a toss up.

I think the list is Walter Payton, Terrell Davis, and maybe LT. Everyone else is a push or not as complete.

Alvin is that good.

I wholeheartedly disagree on Bush being a borderline bust. While he wasn't an LT or Barry Sanders he was a complete back that made some big plays for us at clutch times. Remember the 1st playoff game against Arizona in 2010?

Where I was wrong about Bush was his attitude, I thought he would be a prima donna type, I couldn't have been more wrong. He was really good in pass protection, completely willing to give up his body to block a LB or S. Great team player....he was a big part of the Saints SB team....far from a bust....

If Kamara can stay healthy he has a chance to be that good, the talent and will are there....way too early to compare him to the likes of Payton and LT. Terrell Davis was a great back but ran behind one of the best offensive lines in football, he really wasn't much of a receiver out of the backfield and while he did have the mythical 2000 yard season, he only had 3 1000 yard seasons in his short career. I would take Kamara over him every day....Nothing against him but I think he did not play long enough to be worthy of the HOF....

I was wrong in a bad way about Garrett Grayson, 3rd round QB.

With comments Payton had made about him, coupled with CSPs reputation for being a QB guru, coupled with the opportunity to sit behind Drew for a bit and acquire the necessary "seasoning" for a raw prospect to make it as a pro QB, I thought we not only had our heir apparent but that we had a future All-Pro QB that we stole for a 3rd rounder. But I was wrong. Very, very wrong...

I was wrong in a good way about Alex Anzalone.

My son's Bermudian Springs Eagles played Anzalone's Wyomissing Spartans in the PA AAA high school football playoffs. Anzalone was a man amongst boys in that game, playing RB and LB. Wyomissing crushed the previously 11-0 Eagles in an embarrassingly easy victory and went on to win the PA AAA state football championship. The first team to do so that wasn't from Pittsburgh or Philadelphia. At the time, Anzalone was committed to Notre Dame. He flamed out at ND and transferred to Florida, where he had a solid, if unspectacular college career, primarily due to injuries. Seems like the dude was always hurt. I figured he'd flame out in NO, due to injuries; can't make the team from the rehab room. His career isn't over, and he still MAY prove to be injury-prone, but last season was enough for me to believe he could be a difference-maker, even a pro-bowler, for the Saints. Anzalone and Davis might be the best pair of LBs we've seen in NO since the Dome Patrol days?!

I never get too excited about draft picks until they are in the league for 3-4 years so I am not going to come out and say that i was happy with Player X

I was dead-set wrong on acquisition by Sean Payton and it isn't even a player. I was thrilled when it was announced that we signed Greg Williams as DC. I imagined a dynasty with Sean/Greg having some of the most complete units in the league and it paid early dividends until Bounty Gate came to light and Greg Williams showed absolutely no backbone at all.

That after several mediocre years following Payton's suspension (from 2014-2016) of 7-9 records I thought Payton needed to move on: that the team was no longer listening and that his habits and m.o. were actively working against the best interests of the franchise. As it turns out, his ability to LEAD - to keep adult men from different lifestyles and with different interests outside of their professional employ on point - was quite still there, as evidenced by the facts that both the team is uniquely allied as a group and that he has kept them focused throughout the many travails we have seen happen to this franchise over the last several seasons (suspensions, owner passing, ridiculous bad luck). I still think that some of his greatest strengths are also his greatest weaknesses (from a football perspective), but as far as any questions regarding his leadership or suitability as a coach for this city and team? I have zero. Anyone who simply lasts this long as a Head Coach in the NFL, and for the same team, has some remarkable and resilient characteristics. We are lucky to have him ... something I might not have said just 3 years ago.

Right. Ram and Lat shocked I mean truly shocked we got both those guys. I had done about 100 or more draft simulations and Lat came up in 1. Ram in none of them.
Wrong. Peat
MT was my favorite WR in that draft and once again shocked we got him. Didn't you guys see the video he sent out? ?

I hate admitting it, but Cameron Jordan is by far my biggest miss. I was sold on Cameron Heyward after he annihilated my Hogs in the Sugar Bowl that year. Glad I was wrong.

Andre G: I have seen very few posts more transparent and honest than you are in this one.

Wow!

Good: Lattimore, MT, Ramczak sp ?
Bad: Stephan Anthony, Nick Toon, and I’m 35/65 sold on Marcus Willians. He’s not the same player after that play yet, may never be. Hope I’m wrong
