It's official A.D. to Lakers [MERGED] (1 Viewer)

I’ll admit to not having watched Garland play (not that there were many opportunities), but I’ve been hearing a lot of positive buzz around him (and I’ve seen some clips on YouTube). I think I’ve warmed up to him at #4 for a lot of the same reasons you listed.

He’s got a ton of potential, and we would be able to develop him at our own pace (with the guards we already have on the roster). And like you said, his shooting would be very nice to have. He could also be insurance in case Ball continues to miss a bunch of games.
I think it would be a serious mistake to pass on him.

So, how would this help the Pels? I assume there would have to be something in it for them to redo the deal. I'm slowly learning. :)

Adrian Wojnarowski and Bobby Marks of ESPN reported Tuesday night that the Lakers are in the process of trying to rework the deal with the Pelicans in order to create room for a max salary slot.

It's not like the Pels can force Davis to waive his bonus. What leverage do they have to get us to do anything other than completely cancelling the deal?

If the Pelicans play nice and wait until July 30th to finalize the deal, it would give the lakers enough cap space to sign a 3rd max
contract. If they do it July 6th, the lakers won't have the cap space. In short, Pelinka is in over his head. We still control their draft
for the next seven years. Jerry West would not have made a trade like this in a million years.

What incentive would the Pelicans have to play nice with the Lakers? We bet on their ineptitude and have a lot of stake in them failing, especially in the future. Pelinka was in way over his head and we should let him drown.

When you watch Darius Garland play, it's easy to see his "sky's the limit" potential. He's got a great handle and is a pure shooter. He has to get a lot stronger though and that's not always a given. His decision making is questionable at times, leading to many live ball turnovers and easy transition baskets. While he could certainly figure this all out at the next level, he could also end up being a Lou Williams, 6th man, instant offense guy.

That's not a bad thing, but this draft is a lot deeper than some are making it out to be. DeAndre Hunter was the difference between being upset by a 16 seed and winning a national championship. It's the Kawhi effect. When you know you have the best player on the floor, you play better. So guys like Jerome and Guy who are role players at the next level at best, can shine like stars in college. That's what got Kyle Lowry over the hump this year.

Hunter is 6'8", 225 lbs. He has a 7'+ wingspan and is STRONG. He has a high basketball IQ, knows where he is on the court at all times and can be a ferocious defender. His offensive game needs polishing, but there isn't anything he can't do yet. He can score in the post, he shot 44% from three and 78% from the free throw line. He's the closest thing to Kawhi (#15 pick) since Kawhi.

If Jarrett Culver can continue to fill out his 6'7" frame, he can be a great wing at the next level. Athletic, long, good shooter, plus defender.

I have all of these guys ahead of RJ Barrett. I even think Cam Reddish will be a better pro than RJ when it's all said and done. If Cam would've went to a different school, he'd likely be in the lottery discussion. He had to play as the third option, when he's been the first option all is life. He's a much better defender than RJ. When Zion went out and more of the offense ran through Cam, his numbers were much higher.

RJ is made for NY. Big numbers on a bad team type of guy. There is no question the physical tools are there, but his lack of awareness is alarming. He was typically not defending the opponents' best players and still wasn't overly impressive as a defender. There are times that he's completely lost on the floor and he ball watches defensively. Super teams in college should win championships, not miss the final four. Zion was dominant. Cam was forced to come off the bench, which was also new to him. RJ just doesn't make enough winning plays.

I know all this may sound crazy because it goes against most of what you read or hear about this draft, but when the Raptors win a championship without a single lottery pick on their roster, you realize draft position doesn't mean anything. For every AD, there are more Anthony Bennetts.

The good news is, we have a ton of options. Let's just hope the new FO makes the right decisions. Griff blew me away with his Lakers deal so I hope he continues to knock it out the park.

There was a report that Pelinka didn't know about the significance of the dates when making the deal, which is why they're now scrambling. Apparently, they don't employ a cap guru either so I tend to believe the report. If that's true, that's mind-boggling. With all the money that's being thrown around, you CANNOT make that mistake.

absolutely none, Didn't Gayle Benson say AD to L.A. over my dead body? I don't believe the pels play nice and give the shaft to the Lakers. The longer they stay bad, the higher the picks we get. I personally love it. We pulled off the NFL version of the Herschel Walker
trade.

That was a good read, thanks for the info (I didn't watch as much college basketball this year as I usually do).

Yeah, that's certainly what I gather about Garland. His potential and shooting ability are clear, but we haven't seen any consistency out of him (largely because he got hurt so early).

I would not be upset about taking Hunter at all. His shot might be a little slow right now, and he can stand to improve his dribble-driving, but he is definitely a good shooter and a hard worker. As you said, there isn't much that he is not good at, and he has the physical skills to match up with a lot of different players. I like him a lot.

I'm a little less sold on Culver, but I wouldn't hate the pick or anything. I'll root for RJ Barret if he winds up a Pelican, and he definitely has size and potential, but I'm not a huge fan of taking him (I hate the trade up to get RJ rumors- which I don't believe).

I am a Hunter fan. He might not be more than a 3 & D to start with but I think he could be a very good pro, and right now a solid 3 &D would be very, very useful around Zion

Not a fan of this potential trade; #4 for Robert Covington & #11....

Covington to me is in that like "mediocre starter / good bench" gray area, I'd rather go with Hunter because I think Hunter can be that this season with the upside in the future to be special.

The Ringer was suggesting Myles Turner for #4. I could live with that!

One potential trade partner could be Indiana. As our own Kevin O’Connor reported on Tuesday, the Pacers have discussed a trade with the Pelicans for the no. 4 pick. While no names were explicitly mentioned, there is one clear target the Pelicans should covet: Myles Turner, who last season led the league in blocks per game and attempted 2.6 3-pointers per game at a 38.8 percent clip. Pairing Zion Williamson with a floor-spacing rim protector would help cover up some of Zion’s immediate NBA-level deficiencies while also giving him wide-open lanes down low to put his tank-like body to good use.

Also on the ringer they had a pretty great article about New Orleans and it's relationships with previous franchise players:

So in short, it appears that we're stuck with Lonzo Ball and the only starting position of upgrade is the 5.
From a defensive standpoint, the idea of Jrue & Lonzo are good, but we lack shooters!
If Garland can be a threat to score, then that will catch other team's attention.
