The Countdown (1 Viewer)

Programming note. I was a bit later than usual posting a couple of times this week. I hate that. I know some folks have this as part of their routine in the morning. In order to avoid this in the future, we are going to do something we have done in the past, which is to post the next player the night before, even if it's before midnight and so technically speaking, the posted player is not posted on his right number. But this way, the players are up, even for our early risers.

So try to keep up. We're starting this like, in a minute.

77 Marshall Newhouse 6’ 4” 330 OG TCU

We signed Newhouse in May, and he got some good looks during mini-camp, playing at left tackle. He played for both the Panthers and Bills last year. He brings a veteran’s presence to the o-line, and we need insurance at the left tackle spot, so the team is giving him a very hard look.

78 Erik McCoy 6’ 4” 314 OL Texas A&M

Oh boy, oh boy. I truly like this pick. McCoy is big, but he moves like a little guy. At his size, he runs a sub 4.9 forty. That’s ridiculous. He graded out as an instant starter before the draft, and we needed a new center. I love that we got a good one. I think he’s going to play outstanding football for years, and as good as he is, with his athletic ability, he’s got an upside. And he’s smart, smart, smart. Everything you want in a center. We’ve got some other players that we will be looking at for the position, but McCoy is the penciled-in starter. I think we’re going to like him.

I love our O line Coach Dan Roushar! The man knows his stuff! He personally worked out McCoy at his Pro Day, and met with him for about an hour afterward.

McCoy still has some things to work and improve on. But there’s doubt in my mind, this was Coach Dans guy, and his input was a significant factor in the Saints moving up for McCoy!

You could always justify posting early by basng it on the Pacific or Mountain Time Zone. ?

76 Kenny Bigelow Jr. 6’ 4” 307 DT West Virginia

Bigelow has an interesting story. Was at Southern Cal, and after his second knee injury, he figured his playing days were over. But then West Virginia offered him a shot at a 6th college season. Don’t know how those redshirts work, but Bigelow took his shot and played well, adjusting quickly to a new environment and new defense. He’s big and smart, and so we gave him a free agent contract. I’d love to see him overcome the injuries and make his way in the league. We’ve got good players in the middle, but as we’ve mentioned before, the beginning of the season, we will need help. It would be fun to see Bigelow be that guy.

87 Jared Cook 6’ 5” 254 TE South Carolina

This is story about a team and a player that needed each other, finding each other. Cook has been in the league for 10 years, and last year made the Pro Bowl. He was getting targeted in Oakland, and he responded. What does a guy like that need? A QB. Which we got. And a team with a hole at TE. Which we successfully avoided by signing Cook. I’m excited about this guy. He really got to show off his skills last year, and reports from OTAs are that despite his time in the league, he can run like the wind. Size AND speed. In a TE. Hmmm. What coach in the NFL is good with scheming for tight ends? Yeah. Ours. This could be a good combination, and Cook is happy to be here working with Drew.
This all day! Speed kills! We're loaded on offense, and the defense is the best in a while! Good overall team depth! Can't wait for opening kickoff!

75 Andrus Peat 6’ 7” 316 T Stanford

Peat was drafted as a tackle, he’s still listed on the official roster as a tackle, but it’s hard not to conclude that he has found his home at left guard. Peat made the Pro Bowl last year, and was an essential player in a great line. Although he’s young, he is likely to have a rookie center playing beside him, so it’ll be time to step up and lend some veteran help to his new blocking partner.

One my favorite players.

74 Shy Tuttle 6’ 3” 300 DL Tennessee

Love the name. Tuttle is another one with some injury history, but he worked his way back onto the field and played well his senior season. We will be looking at him at the DT spot. We signed him right after the draft, so this guy was probably already on our radar, and the team has already seen something to like.
