This morning I killed someone’s dog. It ran out of some tall grass on the side of the road and I had no time to react. I was only going 45 mph.
This is the fourth time this year.
The other three times my car suffered mostly cosmetic damages and I didn’t need to do much about it. This time is different.
This time, the dog was bigger and destroyed the bumper cover and the aerodynamic cover that is under the front of the car.
Anyone who has driven on some of Mississippi ‘s county roads knows that the grass grows right up to the edge of the pavement. The dog ran out of grass that was at least two feet high.
All of the animals (one cat, three dogs) were killed within a half mile or so from each other.
I think someone is wondering why their animals keep going missing.
I understand the concept that if you live in a rural area, on a large parcel of land, and little traffic, you might let your pets have some freedom. This stretch of road is just outside of town and is very busy.
Now I’m having to miss work to take care of this and I carry a high deductible so, it’s going to hurt.
Frustrated.

Personally, I think a lot of people out in the country are lazy dog owners. Having a lot of land allows them to be lazy dog trainers or let them have outside dogs. They aren't always well socialized. ..in the cities, you can't pull that off as well, due to proximity.

My wife's dad has like 3 acres of land, but he still takes his dog out on a leash to let her use the "bathroom" outside.

But all over our town, you'd never know if someone's dog was outside and leashed/tied or roaming loose. Used to suck riding a bike on some streets.

Turns out that it wasn’t a dog. It was a cat. 121278

Definitely not someone’s pet

Regardless of what the thing turned out to be, I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments and it's not just limited to people who live out in the country. I've said it in several threads and will keep saying it probably until I die, most people are not good pet owners - especially when it comes to dogs.

Before my bikes got stolen, I used to have a road bike and a group of friends I'd go out on long rides with. Those rides were out in the country as it's difficult to do long distance in the city. As you can imagine, we'd get chased often by people who did not keep their dogs in an enclosed area.

My friend's husband always carried a gun - for protection from dogs as well as all the meth heads/dealers that dwell in the country. He never had to use it on any of our rides but did tell me he had to shoot an aggressive pit bull that chased them once and got a hold of his leg.

I also had something similar to you happen. We were riding up a hill, I was at the head of the group and this dog came running out growling and shirt from this yard across the street. As soon as he hit the road to come after me, a truck that was coming from the opposite direction and cresting the hill (so he could not see him as we were just at the top of the other side of the hill) came driving by and ran it over. Like now your dog is dead and it's your fault.

Once in high school, my bus driver ran over someone's little fluffy white dog. It used to come out chasing the bus every. single. day. One day, it ran out and there was not enough time to stop and it got hit and died. It was really sad too because it suffered for a bit before dying.

Similar to what CapitalCitySaint is saying... I ride my bike behind the levee in Kenner a lot. I haven't run into aggressive dogs yet, but what peeves me are people who let their dog run free near the bike path, or owners who keep them on those extendable leashes and let them roam across the entire path. Their leash is like a trip wire waiting to snag me or some other unsuspecting rider. And then they are always so surprised and taken aback when you call out "passing on your left!" so you won't get tangled up and wreck. Get out of the way fool!

I would say that pet owners should have a fenced in yard if they have pets and are close to roads or paths that are frequently used.

Retractable leashes are trash and should be illegal. When I go out running, and if I say "coming up on your left" and people don't move or don't get their dogs out of the way, I just run right into them. Especially if we are approaching head on. Like I know you see me now collect your dog and move or I step on it. Whatever.

I also dislike people who let their dogs roam off leash in mixed use places. "Oh my dog is friendly" well mine might not be and when your dog runs up on a dog on leash who is aggressive or gets run over by a bike or electric scooter, don't go crying.

I know this sounds mean and I really do love dogs. I just hate most people who own dogs because of their stupidity.

I have one of those leashes, but yeah, if someone is gonna be passing by, dog is gonna be with me on the side I am. The only issue I have is I'm not always sure what dogs mine should socialize with. We have a good number of dog owners in our neighborhood and it's been a bit of a learning curve for me because we as a family have never had our own dog until the one we have now.

Throw it in the garbage immediately!!!

I think start out with the dogs in the hood that are friendly and open to meeting other dogs and avoid the others. Is your dog well behaved?
