The number 4 wideout is not on the roster right now. (1 Viewer)

I think people are concerned about the #4 WR spot because Ginn is more like a #3 who has to be a #2., and because TQS is still unproven and not yet a dependable option.

Agreed. Outside of Thomas and Ginn, we still have questions. Lots of competition and potential, but those last few spots are very important.

A number 4 receiver is not that important. Probably would have been a few years ago when Drew was throwing the ball close to 40 times a game. Payton is probably likely to have Brees throw 27 to 30 times a game. He'll probably complete about 70 percent of those, which means he'll complete 20 to 22 passes a game.

Here is the reception breakdown I have formulated per average game.

M.T 6 catches
A.K 5 catches
Jared 4 to 5 catches
Ginn 3 a game
Traquan 2 to 3 a game
Other receivers and options 2 to 3 catches a game.

In short there is already a lot of mouths to feed with the ball. Opposing defenses are now really going to be stressed due to the addition of Jared at T.E. In addition I think the Saints running game is going to ball out.

I agree with you, although I predict Cook will be the team’s 2nd most targeted behind Thomas, and Kamara will have the 2nd most receiving yards. Sounds crazy, I know. And I think the most important thing about those last few receiver spots is choosing the right guys. There’s a bunch of competition for spots 3-5(6). They won’t be as important as the top 3, but hopefully will be dependable when called upon. I like Grayson simply for the fact that he’s really the only “fast” option we have besides Ginn. Should be interesting to see what how it plays out.

I think Ginn, if healthy is a lock. But I think the competition is more open than you think. When the top pass-catching targets in an offense that no longer goes over the top are Kamara, Thomas, Murray, and Cook, then they may be willing to let more of the young guys stick. Keep an eye on everything beyond receiving. How well do these kids block? Who is getting special teams snaps? (Sigler and Hendrix tweet out the snap counts after games). Who brings skills to the table that take defensive pressure off of the core players?
This particular paragraph really hit the target and is exactly what I think the coaches are going to be looking for as well.

Nice post.

It was stated in an article last week, that SP and co likes when players in house (who know the playbook and system) look to progress every year. It was specifically stated regarding our WRs. So, I’m sure our 4th WR is already on the team. Plus, with Kirkwood/TQS/Carr all returning from last year and competition from our rookie WRs, a couple of these dudes will have to rise to the occasion. I’m sure if SP didn’t have faith in that group, then he would have surely brought in more veteran competition

I think all of the wide receivers for this team come out of this training camp. It would not surprise me if a veteran is cut for a younger player hers this season.

I am less concerned about the number-four receiver than the number-three receiver or even number two. Kirkwood--and I want to see Butler--seems a solid number four. I am not sold on Smith, and Ginn is now a marginal number two.

Why is Ginn a marginal #2? Are you looking at his production when healthy (2017) or his production when injured (2018)?

If the latter, I'd suggest considering his per game production and more critically the difference in team offensive output and efficiency compared to when he wasn't playing.

I watched all of Treadwell's games in college and he was unstoppable at times. Not sure why he never excelled at Minn. It seemed like he never jelled with the QB or coaches there. He might be an easy pick up to give a shot.

Simple, the inability to create any conceivable separation at the NFL level. Hard pass.

Wholeheartedly disagree...the only problem with Ginn is staying healthy...when he is on the field he makes plays, at least 2 big ones a game....and he shows up big in the playoffs...

He doesn't have the quickness to get consistent separation in the NFL and he is no threat to go deep with his lack of foot speed....his game in college does not translate to the NFL, at least thus far....I would be surprised if that changes....

I'm guilty of rating Ginn too low myself. Why? Because he has long since reached his upside. It's a fault that a lot of fans have, loving to follow young players as they improve. So yeah, I think Ginn is under rated.

This whole WR cabal will shake out according to their ability to contribute on ST. Some good looking youngsters that don't do ST will end up on the PS or the street. An extra WR may make the 53 because he's good on ST.
